The software won't install
The software won't install
Well, a disappointing start for me with this new gear. The software install program pops up an error message early on which reads, "Error Number: 0x800040707 Description: (blank)" which isn't much help, so I click "okay." Then I'm asked to agree to the legal stuff (which is also blank) and finally after selecting all the default file locations the install program informs me there is not enough room on my hard disk and I ought to free up some space and so I must cancel the installation. This disk has about 29 gigs free at the moment. What's happening on this WinXP SP3 box? I hope someone can help.
Re: The software won't install
You may occasionally come across a Windows error message with the code 0x80040707, and you'll probably find very little documentation on how to handle it. You'll often encounter this error when you're running an installation or upgrade routine from within Windows.
Solution
If you're getting this error message as part of an installation or upgrade routine, here's one of the easiest ways to circumvent the problem:
1. Go to the directory that holds the file for launching the installation (for example, Setup.exe).
2. Right-click on the installation file and select Run As.
3. Uncheck the box that says Protect My Computer And Data From Unauthorized Activity, and click OK.
Alternatively, if you're running this installation from a CD, you may need to simply clean the CD and try the installation again. Another possibility for resolving this error is to run Windows Update on the system before running the installation routine.
If none of those solutions work, try these two links, which provide additional information on the error and ways to overcome it:

Re: The software won't install
Okay, I tried each of your suggestions in turn (except the last link, which appears to be broken)and all had the same result as before. *sigh*
Re: The software won't install
Try using the following windows installer cleanup utility
http://support.microsoft.com/default.as ... -us;290301
If that dosen't work then download a new version of the windows installer and run it, reboot and try again.

Re: The software won't install
I'm not clear about what needs to be uninstalled with the windows installer cleanup utility to make this thing work. I downloaded it and looked at the list of installed programs--nothing looks out of place. Am I to look for something specifically to uninstall?
The second link you provided wants to install the Windows Installer 2 version for Windows 95/98/Me. As I mentioned in my first message, I am using Win XP. Are you saying I should use it anyway? I should mention that my XP is current as far as Windows Update is concerned.
If I have to strip my software, reformat the disk, re-install the OS and reload all my software, I will do it if it comes to that because I really want to use this gear!

Re: The software won't install
It may come down to a system reinstall
Re: The software won't install
NOOOOOOOOOOooooooooo!!!
Re: The software won't install
The TIR4 software did install after re-building the PC's OS and putting in a fresh copy of MS FlightSim X, but on first use inside FSX, the monitor view locked up looking off to the side when I glanced quickly to the side of my desk (not used to the gear yet). After having to close the program with Windows Task Manager and restarting, FSX will now only show a plane's 2D cockpit view--no virtual cockpit view at all although the view over the top of the dashboard shows the scenery is being tracked correctly. Looks like yet another rebuild of the PC's software. *sigh*
Re: The software won't install
In FSX, have you selected the VC?
Re: The software won't install
I select the VC by way of my joystick switch, the ALT View menu, keyboard F9 or the "S" key (I think) and in each case the screen still shows the 2D panel. I am going to re-install FSX and TIR4 later tonight. Maybe this time it won't get locked up.
