Well, I'm not the original poster, but I'm running Windows XP with service pack 3 and I would also like to know if it's possible.

It might be possible to run the SmartNav as a service, though it is not an officially supported usage of the device/software.

We don't have direct experience setting it up to run as a service, so we don't know what potential issues might be encountered. There do seem to be some resources online for doing this kind of thing though.

Thank you for the reply. I skimmed over the link you provided, but I'm not sure at first glance that I want to tackle such a project myself.

Being that a substantial portion of your users are people with disabilities, like myself, who rely on the SmartNav to be able to operate the computer, I would think that this would be a highly desirable feature for you to implement.

As it stands, you cannot use the SmartNav for the Windows login screen, and I have also run into the problem when updating video drivers. There are probably other examples.
