Virtual surround / virtual concert hall

I have a very good headset, whose sound-quality far outshines the tiny surround-set that I have room for in my office. What I would like to be able to do is, put on my headset (with my Track Clip Pro attached), and have TrackIR move the sound-channels around in accordance to my head-movement, thus creating a virtual surround environment for me to listen to my music in. (i.e. TrackIR functionality affecting the normal sound output in Windows.)
For extra credit, this functionality should be usable both with stereo- and surround-type sources.
Now, for all I know, some student with too much time on his hands, has already sat down and banged out a program like what I'm describing.
What I would like to know is, has anyone heard of such functionality implemented yet?
Or if not, do you know if it would be very hard to make? (I do dabble in programming, but haven't taken a good look at the TrackIR SDK yet.)
