OK, I think I've tried everything in my power, hopefully somebody can help me. It took 2 nanoseconds to get addicted to flight simming with the trackIR and now I'm having withdrawals

Everything was fine until I recently reinstalled windows. I'm running Vista 64bit SP1. Now I cannot get my trackIR to be detected.
The latest version of the TrackIR software installs just fine. I can confirm the existence of the relevant .inf's etc.
I've installed the latest intel USB drivers for the chipset on my mobo, as well as the latest BIOS update.
Whenever I plug in my TrackIR to the PC (USB2 port, with no extraneous USB devices connected, and Im not using a hub) a notification pops up telling me that the OS cannot identify the device I plugged in. The OS subsequently installs it as an unknown device. I followed the troubleshooting guide to removing this entry in device manager, and reinstallation of the software etc. to no avail.
I then looked on the forums and noted a registry fixing tool, bundled as a MFC app, which also cannot detect the trackIR's existence and bails. Strike 2.
All the while the little blue LED on the damned thing is taunting me every five seconds. I promise to try a different PC ASAP, but I was hoping that I had missed something blindingly obvious.
I have screen shots of the various notifications that windows shows me post USB connnection, if they are of use.
TIA,
JB
PS for the cynics; this isn't an April fools joke.
