TrackIR 4 not behaving

A search of these forums hasn't turned up a similar problem so here goes:
My TrackIR4 has the following symptoms:
1. no longer tracks around to the right past 90 degrees (track clip pro or hat track, same problem)
2. very jittery especially with hat track, needs lots of smoothing to even out jitters
Using the version 5 software, I see the global grid spin until it gets to 90 degrees, then the tracking breaks down and the image just spins crazily. In the profile Yaw window, the little tracking mark won't go past about the second step of the curve. The interesting thing is I can track around perfectly to the left, and even around past 360 degrees if I set the speed high enough. Increasing the speed helps the tracking to the right but I need a value up around 4 or 5 just to look past 90 degrees.
In the tracking window, the three dots are nice and clear, and the failure to track to the right is not associated with any loss of dot clarity, and there are no red flashes or anything similar.
I have uninstalled and re-installed both the version 4 and version 5 software several times, tried several different USB configurations, tried the track clip pro and the hat clip, made sure the correct clip setting is selected, and so on. I even took the cover off and used a professional lens cloth to clean the camera lens as a last resort.
My feeling is that the unit itself has either been damaged by a surge or static or is just breaking down internally, which will mean I'll be up for a new unit if there are no fixes you can come up with.
To sum up, the basic problem is that the unit will track perfectly to the left, but not to the right. Any clues?
