Can a track IR wear out?

I don't know exactly how long I have had my TIR3, but it's been a while. It gets used alot. I am wondering, even thought it is a solid state device, does it have a fineite life span? Can it wear out? Plastics break down, capacitors leak. Nothing lasts for ever.
The reason I ask is that my TIR seems to be getting progressively more tempermental. Some times it's there on boot, sometimes not. I have to always check the view screen to make sure it is working before I play a game. Sometimes it will start (lights and all) but the view screen (green track indicators on black background) will be nothing but a plain gray box. Unplug, replug and all is fine. I have had driver issues and comflicts in the past that I have always been able to resolve but this is getting to the point of being overly problematic. Yes, I have tried different USB ports and that has no effect on the problem.
