Either supports 6 DOF, within the application itself. It then comes down to hardware specifications.

Track IR 5 is my first experience with Track IR and I love it, it is awesome.

TrackIR 5 will always be better than TrackIR 4, with any game and any genre. It has a 12% wider field of view and 10x the overall tracking accuracy of TrackIR 4. But, you will notice the improvements more in some games, or with certain play styles. So, in FSX, if you like to zoom in and focus on elements of the cockpits, TrackIR 5 will give you more stability (the higher resolution increases stability when zoomed). Or, if you like to look around your environment a bit--especially +/- 90 degrees side to side, it will give you more stability at those extreme head angles. But, if you primarily just look straight forward, with the occasional glance around, you're not going to see as big of a difference.

If your budget allows it, I always recommend TrackIR 5 wholeheartedly over 4. TrackIR 4 is several year old technology now, and it does show compared to the new stuff. But, if price is an issue, TrackIR 4 will still give you a great introduction to 6 DOF head tracking.

Hope this helps.
