TrackIR 5 stopped working properly: Broken?

I've had my TrackIR 5 since July, 2009. Up to this past week, I've used it three or so times per week. It has worked perfectly every time, and I've grown dependent on it in FSX and other flight sims.
I've changed nothing on my computer (Vista-64, 8 gigs RAM, NVidia 9800GT, latest graphics drivers, latest DirectX, latest TrackIR program and drivers, etc.), but two days ago, out of the blue, TrackIR stopped working properly. I'm now wondering if there is a hardware problem with the camera unit.
The symptoms:
Although the TrackIR software finds the camera (so no USB power issues), the camera doesn't track the TrackClip. The TrackIR program shows the view erratically skittering around: the wireframe head views circle and skip around very quickly, with the head barely in view. I also can no longer center the view.
In addition, where there were once three green points in the camera window indicating the reflectors of the TrackClip, the camera window shows mostly red, in spite of the fact that there is no light source behind me and my seat (my computer is in a dark, windowless room in the basement). There are no green points in this window. It also does not matter at all whether I change the sliders for sensitivity/background light/etc.
Questions:
Is this a hardware problem? Is my TrackIR toast?
I've already sent email to support@naturalpoint.com, but I was wondering if anyone else has encountered this problem.
