Should I unplug TrackIR 5 when not in use?

Hello,

After a couple of years of use, my TrackIR4 has died. I suspect I had it plugged to the computer, which was on for a long time and maybe it overheated (?).

Anyway, I just got a new TrackIR5 and I was wondering about this: should I unplug it when the computer is on and the device is not in use?

My new TrackIR5 is plugged to a USB port in my laptop. My old TrackIR4 was plugged into a powered USB hub.

I use it for DCS Black Shark/A-10 and ArmA 2.

Thanks in advance.

Hello JC -

While there is no official recommendation either way, I would have to say that the best practice would be just to shut down the TrackIR software. When the software is not running, most of the device features are disabled, including a majority of the heat generating parts of the camera. If you have the software off, but the device remains plugged in, there shouldn't really be too much of an issue.

Thanks -

And what about the Track Clip Pro?

Even if I shut down the software, the three IR lights on the clip stay on.
Would it be best to unplug the Track Clip Pro?

Any device that emits light has the potential to burn out, and LEDs are no exception. The IR LEDs in the TrackClip Pro are rated to run for several years before they burn out. You can unplug the device to save power or life on the LEDs, but if you forget here or there, it's not too big of an issue.

Thanks -
