My brand new track clip pro wont work

Or is it me?
I followed the directions that came in the box (yes I acutally read them for the first time ever in the history of installing anything). No matter if I use trackir4 or 5 software the track clip pro will not work unless its point blank in front of the camera - in other words its not usable. My buddy never had to sit 5 cm away from his monitor to get his to work.
The regular clip works fine but I paid extra for the clip pro so I expect it to work. For the record this is a trackir4, and I have windows 7 64 bit installed.
I am selecting the proper settings to enable the track clip pro in the software, it just seems my unit wont power up. I dont see the led's turn red (thought they did on my friends) on the clip itself. I have tried using the built in dongle to plug the USB plug into and I have tried using a separate USB port on the back of the computer as well. Nothing seems to work.
