Clue to a BF3 workaround?

Not sure if you guys are aware of this but Battlefield 3 allows you to use freelook (with a mouse) and still control the Rudders in a jet.
So if anyone can work out if there's a reason why the rudders still work, but the other controls do not they might be on the way to getting a mouse emulation workaround for trackIR.
I've noticed that the rudder axis binds differently in bf3 than the other axes when using a joystick.... perhaps that is related.
