Halstead : Windows XP services error:

Post by Aces High 2 »

Hi Halstead,

Whilst looking at the Windows XP event viewer I spotted this re-occuring error. Could this be the reason that TrackIR has been giving me problems with the new 2.1 software ?.

The NaturalPoint Tracker USB Driver (ezmon.sys) service failed to start due to the following error:
The service cannot be started, either because it is disabled or because it has no enabled devices associated with it.

Any help and advise much appreciated.

Thanks and regards

Hi all,

Well I'm no closer to solving my problems. I've tried various things including re-installing the latest USB2 update for XP and still the same problem.

TrackIR will cease to work when I press and hold F9 to activate it it just stops responding (in mouse look). I can see that it's responding to my head movement in the software's "monitor" window but it doesn't move the mouse cursor. I can quit the software re-load and all will be well for a while and then the same thing happens. I have uninstalled and re-installed v2.1 so many times and it hasn't solved a thing.

The same thing happens in Enhanced mode, I did post on the Il-2 Sturmovik forum in connection with this but couldn't solve the problem. I've gone back to v1.4 and everything is great except of course I can't use enhanced mode with Forgotten Battles. A pity because this problem had been with me in every version of the TrackIR software from 2.0 onwards .

I've tried unistalling and re-installing everything that I can think off including my USB2 five port PCI card (only bought this because of frame loss with TrackIR enabled when plugged into the onboard VIA USB ports), just have to live with mouselook and V1.4 because i'm pretty fed up with loosing TrackIR several times in a session as it does now.

ANY help much appreciated.

Regards

Hello:

Hmm. Well I think that the problem is not with USB at all, as you can see the dot image in the data window correctly, then the system is working to that point. If it stops moving the cursor after a given amount of time then the problem is somewhere else.

What exactly happens to make it stop working? You hit a Hotkey and it stops?

Hi Jim,

Thanks very much for your help. Yes it is when I hit the "enable" hotkey. I have enable setup so that it is F9 which doesn't clash with any other used hotkey assignments. I do not have "toggle" enabled as I wish to hold down F9 or rather have my joystick programmed button do the same. I had exactly the same key and joystick assignment in previous versions and all worked fine right up until version 2.

The cursor just judders and stop responding to head movment. I do wonder about that error in windows XP event viewer after every boot, why should windows not be able to start the ezmon.sys service ?. I didn't think that any TrackIR software ran as windows services ?, certainly doesn't appear as a listed service.

The other error that appears in event viewer every boot is :

"The Human Interface Device Access service terminated with the following error:
The specified module could not be found.

For more information, see Help and Support Center at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp."

The HID service won't start automatically or from manual. I wonder if these errors are related ? or just coincidence. When I try and start this service I get :

"Could not start the Human Device Interface Access service on Local Computer

Error 126: the specified module could not be found.

The command line path to the missing? module is :

C:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exe -k netsvcs

I hope the above helps and thanks agiain for helping out.

Best Regards

Guys-
Have you folks with this problem done any updates to XP in the past month or so? There's a recent XP Hotfix which *might* be causing the problem.

Let me know.

Im fully updated with SP1 and all hot fixes / critical updates and mine still works like a charm.

Ive also heard a hot fix causes Saitek X45 problems. I do not have any problems with it either.

So that isnt the culprit for me, but has been for others.....

Hi Guys,

Firstly a big thank you for your help. I think that I might have found the culprit. I uninstalled windows xp Q814033 hotfix and both my trackIR unit and my HOTAS Cougar now no longer suffer drop outs. My event viewer remains the same but I'm not worried about this too much.

Cheers and thanks

Happy Easter

Aces JG123Great! Glad that it worked. We've a few tests on our side and found the Q814033 issue to be replicable about 75% of the time. Annoying, but at least we do have a solution. It'll go into the next troubleshooting FAQ. Now Ive got to go and try to get M$ to fix the problem
