New TrackIR owner - How to make Active DOT?

Post by THX-1138 »

Hello to all!

I have just purchased TrackIR after almost a year of studying the pros/cons of this device in flight sims.

I have read much about active dots and seems to me that other owners have great results with it instead of reflective dots. Natural Point is even looking into adding this option into their next gen of Track IR.

My question:

What parts do I need to make it? I have a local Radio Shack that I can get the needed parts.

What is the wiring schematic (if any) for this simple device?

Anything else that I should know about active dots and trackir?

Your help and knowledge is greatly appreciated.

Best and kindest regards,

THX-1138

PS: Anyone else here use Game Commander, Track IR, ED 3D glasses and MS FFB 2 for that extra immersion factor?

Just one question, why do you need active dot ?
I've no problems with trackIR except sometimes from the sun reflecting on my skin. (but it's in the middle of the day and I play often the nigth )
And the active dot don't correct this problem.
I use this technic for the dot
except now I've moved dots on a baseball hat. (the dot pins don't stuck well on the micro and sometimes I need to remove the micro to eat )

But to make an active dot:

Just what you need is an Infrared led. Ask to your provider of this led if you need to put a resistor in serial with the led, and normally with a swatch battery this should work. After you need to find a way to put the led on you head.
it's all.
and try to not hide the border of the led. This can be usefull if you move your head wide on sides.

This could be a reason:

When you have an active dot you do not look into the light source. (that is when you turn off the leds on the tracking device, only found that option only in the SmartNAV software though)

Note that your LED needs to work on 880 nm.
Most LED's you can buy in the store work on 950 nm. In most cases it's your too far off (taking tolerance into account) to work properly.

I have good results with a Siemens LED: SFH485P
Since it works on 1.5 Volt, you can easily use it with a small 1.5 Volt battry. It consumes 100 mA. Just add a small resistor (10 ohm, experiment to get a good result in your situation) to limit the currency a bit, to safe the LED from wearing fast.

I picked this one (of the ones suggested by my local dealer) because it hace a wide radiation angle.
