6DOF Vs 2DOF

Post by Winding Man »

I have only spent a few hours comparing the new Vector 6DOF vs the traditional 2DOF.

Well it works reasonably well without any mods "straight out the box" and what I "feel" in sim has to be the best, however I have noticed the following:

1) The tracking freezes because one of the lower "base" dots either falls of the left or the right of the tracking screen.

2) This is more noticeable in 6DOF because there is "less screen" either side of the two base dots as opposed to the single central dot in 2DOF mode, therefore allowing less lateral movement before the dot falls out of the camera's FOV.

3) One solution might be to make the two base dots closer together...would give more lateral freedom and less susceptability to one of the dots falling off the tracking screen.

4) An even better enhancement may be an adjustable camera FOV setting - not sure if this is possible as it possibly implies a lens??
However this would also make the distance between camera and head gear less constrained/critical?

All in all WOW what a tremendous sensation to lean sideways over the edge of the pit of a WW1 bird and look down or fwd etc to study the gauges.

This is only the beginning to better immersion...in flight sims..

Thanks

Hi Winding Man

Seems many problems are fixed by moving the unit further back (36") and having it bang in line with the dots - i.e same height and pointing exactly at it (imagine a laser beam from the front of the unit try to get your dots right in line when centered). I hope that makes sense.

cheers

Hello Polovski - seems we all frequent the same forums lol - your reply makes perfect sense!

Yes that is exactly what I need to do but I will have to build a shelf over the monitor to achieve that.

I will do that next weekend - in the meantime if the devs could make the camera FOV adjustable (software or hardware) this would make virtually any distance workable?

Thanks

I've moved mine back to the wall behind my monitor, it is now 42 inches from the reflectors. The dots now never fall out the range no matter how far I move my head.

Also remember that the reflectors on the hat MUST be perfectly parallel with the TrackIR3.

Hello:

Just wanted to let you all know that we are reading these forums and noting the feedback on the current Vector design. This is a major step forward in immersion and we will continue to improve it with time.

We can't change the FOV of the system as that is the lens itself. We can have a different lens, but that is a new unit, and a wider FOV means less resolution. Regardless, we are working on the problem.

... Actually, after a few hours of testing, I have great experience with the TIR3 standard & Track Hat & VE. I felt it smoother and more precise. I have never left the scan zone.

The most common problem of people leaving the 'track zone', especially 'old timers from TIR1' is that they have the sensor unit too close.

The cruicial difference between the 2 (TIR1 - TIR3) is massive in relation between the 2. TIR1 had an optimum range of about 12-16" (30-40cm), TIR3 is about 30-36" (90-95cm).

As it stands these distances are not mentioned in the relative manuals, and is the biggest failing of TIR (the hardware and if set up right the software work very well). If distance guides were in the manual there would be fewer 'I keep looking at my feet after I have looked up again' posts.

The other thing to remember (and this goes for any technical forum) is that most people come to technical forums when the have some trouble. Most of the time (and I have been guilty of this too) troubles arrise of people not reading the manual.

The amount of 'help' posts against the amount of units sold does not really give a fair proportion of complaints (no I do not have the figures, but I do have experience in simular areas.) Once again this goes for any technical forums.

The thing that I really like about NaturalPoint and TIR, is the interation of the company and it's clients (us). They are not afraid to work with and listen to their users, and in return this has tobe one of the most mature forums I have come across.

Time for me to get off my soap box, but the last couple of days with 6DOF and GTR has left me kind of mellow

I'm not exactly sure your problem, as I've never had any problem leaving the track zone.
