Rehab/Biomechanical applications

Post by Manning »

I stumbled on Optitrack while searching around for viable (read - "cost-effective") motion capture systems for biomechanical analysis.

Our company deals in employment-related injury management, and the applications of mocap here are enormous. Sadly, our industry (worldwide) is governed by the dictates of insurance companies, hence the expense of the "elite" motion capture systems makes them unfeasible.

I can see enormous commercial potential for a mocap system that is low cost (ie - less that US$10 000) and aimed as biomechanical assessment (range of movement, gait analysis, etc). At this price point you have a system that would be price-effective for rehabilitation providers (of which there are over 1000 in Australia alone).

Is anyone developing a system optimised for biomechanical analysis? Is anyone interested in building one? I'd be very interested in providing functional requirements and developmental guidance.

Hello:

Thanks for this interesting post.

We have had a few people purchase our systems over the years, including the TrackIR for range of motion studies. I know one company that has bought about 50 of them for head / neck studies. The new OptiTrack system is designed so that it would be easy to create a whole package around this concept.

We would be very interested in knowing what the requirements would be for such a system, as that may fit with plans that are already in motion, pun intended. Please email me at jim at naturalpoint dot com with more info, I would be happy to work with you to see what we can come up with.
