Front projector use

Post by Raven »

Hi
I'm using Tkir with a front projector I cant put it infront of me at hat level so on the advice from my previous post I put the track Ir behind my head and reversed the axis. Problem is the light from the screen screws it up so it wont track well even with sensitivity turned down.
Now I wonder if I can mount it on the ceiling? will it work can I get a longer cable Have you guys developed a way around using track ir with front projection?
thanks Rave

The issue can be with the IR heat source, which can be given off by many different devices. You try mounting the unit to the side as well.

Yes you would need to have the vector clip pointed in the direction of the TrackIR unit. There also is a setting in the TrackIR software which tells the camera that is on the left or right side of the customer, for head movement tracking.

I saw a review with Jim Richardson
Here is an excerpt

"I have been talking about this on the boards in the past few weeks. I am lucky to have all the best toys including most all commercial HMDs made. I personally dont like the experience that much when compared to a large monitor. I like to be able to see my stick and keyboard. My ideal setup is to have a large projector in front of a home made cockpit, like some guys have posted on this and other sites. I think that this gives you the best experience overall. I have tried this with a trackIR and the experience is overwhelming. Another benefit of having a projector is that you can watch movies on it as well. Look at the high end military sims, they all are projector based and provide the most real experience possible."

I would like to know how this was accomplished
I need to be seated 12' back from the projector isn't that way to far for tracking?
Another point is I will need a very long USB from the track camera to my PC do you sell add on USB for the track Ir?

As per our recent chat there must be a way to make front projector work without having to were my hat sideways I cant accept that answer.
what would the maximum distance from camera to vector clip be ?
Is there a way for you to pass this info on up or call someone to find out how Jim set things up?
Thanks Rave

You can extend the range of the TrackIR using active IR LEDs. We are currently in the process of releasing a new accessory that includes Active LEDs.

Well are currently in the development stage for the ActiveIR add-on, and should have more information posted on our website soon.

In practice, the USB specification limits the length of a cable between full speed devices to 5 meters (a little under 16 feet 5 inches). For a low speed device the limit is 3 meters (9 feet 10 inches). To increase the distance, you need to have a powered hub to extend the cable length for another 5 meters.
