Trouble Re-Installing TIR1 Software

Post by WWNatops »

I recently had a computer crash due to a malware attack. I completely re-installed Windows XP Pro and all other programs and hardware (including Cougar HOTAS which is a USB device and now functions normally.) My puter functions properly in all respects except I cannot re-install my TIR!

As directed, I unplug the TIR hardware before installing the software. (I use 2.11 which functioned very well before). The new installation re-boots the computer, but when it comes back up to the windows log in screen, I cannot type in my password, the mouse does not work, and I cannot toggle using my keyboard.

The only way I can get operational again is to utilize the Norton 'GOBACK' utility. The NaturalPoint icon remains on the desktop and when I click it, I get a warning window that says "This version of software is not compatible with your hardware model. Please run the software that matches your hardware model (AT, EG, Base, GX) instead." When you exit this, TIR shuts down.

Something's wrong here, because I used this s/w and h/w with the same computer for almost 2 years!

I've tried d/l newer s/w from NaturalPoint downloads and I get the same freeze-up when the installation re-boots.

Windows XP Pro
AMD Athlon XP3000+
2.17GHz
1.00 GB RAM

I don't think the TIR is broken, because when I click the icon the program comes on and I quickly go to the tracking window and see a bright image of the reflector tracking properly, but the warning window pops up in about 4 seconds and shuts it down.

Rick, I sure hope someone can help me.

I'm wondering... did you download SP2 for windows xp? Did you have it installed before the crash? Also what is the serial number of your TrackIR 1?

We will get it solved one way or another.

Thanks, Rick.

Yes, I had SP2 installed before the crash. I'm at work right now and serial no. not available, but I'm post it later.

I'm definitely going to upgrade to TIR3 Pro, but that's planned for next summer with projected puter upgrade, hence request for a solution on this older version.

Of note. I have just been flying IL2 4.01m using regular mouse for limited views this past weekend, and everything other than my TIR works ok. [I have a Cougar HOTAS which is USB...hence I don't think it's USB related.]

I hope that this is just something small!!!

Edit: TIR Serial Number: 002996

I FOUND THE SOLUTION!!

Age old story: RTFM!!!!

I d/l 2.12b and saw the old manual, so I opened it and began reading. Hark! What's this about the Device Manager??? Yes, I found the said unused USB Device and deleted it = 2.12b installed and TIR working as advertised.

[Rick, I am curious as to just what goody my TIR serial number would have revealed.]

Thanks for the help...it got my thinking cap working overtime = success!!

NOT SO FAST!!!

I was able to load 2.12b successfully and got my TIR1 up and running. I successfully flew in IL-2FBPF using TIR with no problems.

HOWEVER...I shut my puter down and came back to it later and booted up...IT WAS FROZEN AT THE LOGIN SCREEN!!! Keyboard would not work and mouse would not work...I COULD NOT NAVIGATE AT THE LOGIN!!!

Applied Norton "GOBACK" in an attempt to return to a point where 2.12b was installed...NO JOY = FROZEN! I used Norton "GOBACK" to return to a pre-2.12b installation and lost the TIR capability AGAIN! [Sorry if my frustration is showing.]

I am at a total loss as to the cause. I think I've proved that my TIR is functional, but something in my s/w is fubar.

The serial number tells me what firmware revision you have.

It is definately something to do with the software... Have you looked in the device manager again to see if that unknown USB device is still in there?

Rick,
The 'unknown USB Device' was there, but because I returned to a point before I deleted it.

I deleted and attempted a re-install. This time my puter crashed and I am unable to find a safe return point for 'GOBACK'. I can reboot, but my puter is completely frozen (no mouse, no keyboard, arrow keys no worky) at the login screen.

Hard down at this point. I can't help but think that I did something wrong in the TIR re-installation as EVERYTHING ELSE worked 4.0. I even got the TIR1 to work temporarily, but when I shut down and came back later, the puter was frozen at the login screen as before.

Have you gotten it working yet? Before you tried to reinstall again I'd make sure your computer is stable without the software. Can you even boot in safe mode?

Hello, Rick.

Sorry for the long delay in replying. It seems my problem was computer hardware related and not TIR after all. So, my 'confuser' has been in the shop.

My Hard drive was going and finally crashed and my memory was trashed somehow in the process.

What pointed me at the TIR was it all started while I was re-installing TIR. Your last post was right on the money!

Thanks for the help!!
