This has probably been posted before but just in case...
Since getting FSX I've put up with it's annoying habit of always reverting to 3d virtual cockpit when you pan more than about 30 degrees in the 2d cockpit.
But then tonight when I was flying an FSX mission I realised I was panning around 180degs in either directions without the 3d cockpit appearing. I've tried and tried but can't repeat the behaviour on demand but it happened three or four times by itself which leads me to think either there's a work around that disables this annoying behaviour or that's it switchable somewhere in FSX.
Anyone got any ideas?

FSX 2D switches to 3D cockpit when panning
Re: FSX 2D switches to 3D cockpit when panning
One of the new features of FSX is the expansion of TrackIR into the different view modes. You still have use of the TrackIR in the "Virtual Cockpit" mode, with full 6 DOF support, but this has also been expanded to the other views as well. As always, to disable the TrackIR rotation in the different view modes, just press the F9 key (default) to pause the TrackIR software.
"2D Cockpit" mode - TrackIR has support for head movement in both the Yaw and Pitch axes.
Outside View: Tail Similar to the 2D cockpit mode, in that there is support for both the Yaw and Pitch axes.
Outside View: Spot Rotating your head in the Yaw axis direction (looking left and right) will cause the view to rotate to the side that you are looking at (i.e. if you look to left, your view will rotate so you are looking at the left side of the aircraft).

Re: FSX 2D switches to 3D cockpit when panning
Hi Vincent, I think I'm probably not making myself clear!
I'm a BIG fan of the fact that TIR now pans in all the view modes, it's particularly useful in 2d cockpit and I wouldn't want to go back to the old FS9 behviour of only getting being able to use TrackIR in Virutal Cockpit.
I think the problem I'm having is a feature of FSX not TrackIR. I only posted here because it interfers with the whole TrackIR+FSX experieince and I was hoping someone has figured out how to get around the problem.
Essentially the problem is this: FSX pans without interruption in all view modes except 2d. in that mode, when you swivel more than about 30 of pan in either direction, the 2D cockpit disappears and is replaced by the 3D cockpit. It's extremely frustrating that MS don't appear to have a switch to stop this behaviour - sometimes you just want a good look round without anything getting in the way
I was flying the search and rescue mission the other evening and noticed that for some reason I was able to pan around by any amount without the 3D cockpit automatically appearing. This happened a few times and reverted to normal after I showed a panel or centred my TrackIR viewpoint. I couldn't see a common set of actions that was disabling the 3D switchover but boy do I wish I could!
So that's pretty much it. We don't appear to be stuck with this automatic behaviour in FSX but if anyone's figured out how to control it please post the answer here

Re: FSX 2D switches to 3D cockpit when panning
Got me, as I haven't had the time recently to do as much "Testing" as I like. It could have something to do with the way the cockpit was designed for that aircraft.
Re: FSX 2D switches to 3D cockpit when panning
Just in case anyone else can help solve this mystery I've posted a video of this on my website (2mb - Frapped from FSX).
http://www.fsbuddy.com/fsx.wmv
It shows what I mean far more clearly than I could explain.
I'd still be grateful for any input, I've only had one response from the other forums in Simvation & SimFlight and he was a TrackIR user.

Re: FSX 2D switches to 3D cockpit when panning
Actually, that happens with all of the aircraft, the couple I tested with this morning. It has to do with the way FSX moves the head in 2D mode, and once it gets to a certain point it only knows how to render the view in VC mode.
Re: FSX 2D switches to 3D cockpit when panning
I've got to thet bottom of this!
As suspected it's not related to TrackIR, it's actually down do the way FSX changes views and panels.
Using the W to cycle through 2D Panel - Mini Panel - No Panel prevents the VC from popping up (exactly like FS9).
However using the keyboard shortcut that's assigned to 'Show or hide Panel 1' you only get about 30 degrees of pan before the VC suddenly replaces the 2D panel.
Quite why there's a difference I don't know but I've tried this after a cold reboot (just to be sure!) and am happy to report no VC whatsover until I command it.
