Question about 6DOF

Post by nigelmcelwee »

I bought a trackir 3 a long time ago and used it in PF and did not like it too much. The view would go off center when I would look away from the monitor and I would constantly have to recenter, etc...

I heard that the new trackir4 with vector expansion helps alleviate these problems. Is this true?? I know PF doesnt support 6DOF but the rumor is it makes the 2DOF better in PF...is this true??

The 2DOF is better within any 2 DOF games, as the 6 DOF support can track your movements better. I.E. it doesn't get confused with a roll movement, when all you wanted was a yaw movement.

Hi Nigel, lets look at your first 'problem' first.

If you are finding that you are having to look so far round that you can't see the screen you need to edit your profile.
Open up your TIR and double left click your mouse on the one you want in the bottom (Available Profiles) section. This will alow you to Edit your profile. Up to 4 screens might open up and the one you need has the name of the profile.

In the 'Motion' section there is a button callled 'Edit Yaw' click on it to open the 'Curve Editor'. On the right side there is 'Shift Entire Curve' on the right side with 2 arrows. Click on the bottom one a couple times to shift the entire curve down. Use the 'Copy Curve to Axis' on the 'All' setting to duplicate your edited curve to all the others.

You can then use 'Smoothing' to speed up and slow down the speed of your head movement in game.

Phew..

The TIR4 is smoother due to a higher canera speed, but more importantly a wider viewing angle. The new viewing angle will help stopping any out of bounds problems. I think that the difference between TIR3 and TIR4 is more profound than any other release. Even in older games that are 2 DOF are smoother with a TIR4 because of the higher frame rate of hte camera.

You have not mentioned it but there is now an active clip for your headset. It does mean another cable (it is powered by USB) and more time to get used to setting up. This extra time is well spent. The dreadded red spot (in the tracking window) is greatly reduced or even removed according to the lighting of the room.

Sorry for the essay

ahh thanks for the response. I sent back the TrackIR 3 because it was too jerky for me and because I constantly had to recenter my view. I did buy the 4 and it was shipped yesterday with the track clip PRO.

I should get it tomorrow and I am looking forward to it!
