TrackIR 3 died

Post by zuucca »

Hi,

My TrackIR 3 stopped working some days after I installed it into Vista PC. Computer still finds the device, and from the device manager it looks like to be ok. But when I start the TrackIR software, it hangs completely. No red lights, nor green light gets turned on.

I've reinstalled software several times 4.1.030Final.B and I also tried it in my old PC in which it's now neither working anymore. Not even with the original CD version 4.1.025. On both PC's TrackIR software says in Device info line: No device detected, or sometimes OptiTrack Unknown : 8618883. Status line at the bottom says "Configuring", but software just hangs there. After a while, TrackIR software turns to gray and says (not responding).

Event wiever looks something like this (Free translation from Finnish):

Is it possible that the TIR software makes some changes to device itself and in Vista there is some conflict that messed around this process leaving device dead.

There is nothing within the TrackIR software, which directly writes to the TrackIR3 device.

Have you tried it on another system?

I've now tested it with my old PC (XP sp2) and with my portable. It's not working in these machines either. Sometimes TrackIR software says "SmartNAV and TrackIR cannot be used at same time. Close SmartNAV before running TrackIR". I don't even have SmartNAV.

It sounds like the unit itself has failed.

The unit seems to be so simple that it should not fail. There is no warranty anymore so I decided to take a closer look to device and opened it.

Red wire was almost cut from J1 so I resoldered it (and all others too). Obviously this did not help, but while doing this I noticed that resistor R16 is missing. Is this a defect or by design?

Design - sometimes boards get reworked, after the initial design, so components are no longer required.

This was a fun equipment, but unfortunately it's lifetime was shorter than with any other electric device I've ever owned. If the warranty period will be increased to 3 years, I might buy a new one. But with 1-year warranty, I just can't.

BTW: The electronics within camera unit are hardly worth more than 15$ (excluding the IR-camera in it). And the part that probably has failed (XC9572XL) is worth 3$. Knowing that won't make me too happy.
