Installation fails, npusb3.inf not recognized

Post by Bernhard »

As mentioned in the manual I did the following:
(1) install software
(2) plugin smartnav device
the device is not recoginzed by windows xp - unknown usb device. i tried everything, uninstall the driver, reboot (2 times), reboot with device, without device, etc., no success

then i tried it on my notebook (xp too). it works fine. the difference during the installation process is, that on my notebook i was asked if I would like to install an unsigned driver. I wasn't asked this on my other pc. (under system properties - driver signature, the option warning is selected)

i think this is the reason for the problem. is there a way to install the driver manually. if i use settings-hardware-add/remove hardware and choose the inf-file (npusb3.inf) in the drivers directory of smart-nav i got the response, that at this location there is no hardware information. (but this works on my notebook too).

serial: 9554200020

please help.
thx

Hello Bernhard,

It sounds like your desktop PC has a registry issue. This happens in rare cases.

I have sent you an email with registry fix instructions attached.

Please let me know if the fix, takes care of the problem.

Best Regards,
Kevin

I've always had serious issues with smartnav drivers being uninstalled and reinstalled when Windows reboots which means that sometimes it is impossible to get smartnav-it has the "couldn't find hardware" type message.
This was unrelenting with my older AMD platform, it's slightly better with the new one although I had to make sure to unplug and replant the smartnav Every time I reboot.

Also with this version of Windows, drivers uninstall or the smartnav application fails to close and thus can't reopen properly every time it's restarted, but the solution with this AMD platform appears- unplug and replugging will crash the smartnav exe and it will uninstall reinstall the drivers if necessary.

You might have to have a habit of unplugging and replugging smartnav everytime you turn the computer on. In fact, I have to make sure actually power down the power supply and then switch the computer on again and then unplug and replant the USB if I want to be sure that smartnav will appear successfully in Windows

Hello DC,

We have resolved Bernhards issue, there was a registry key not being set properly. Once the key is set with the correct information there is no need to uninstall/reinstall again, unless you are upgrading the software.

Your issue is completely different. I have not heard of it happening before. For some reason your computer is enumerating all of the USB ports on start up, which means the drivers need to be reinstalled on reboot.

Are you plugging the unit into a hub? Is the hub powered? For testing can you try plugging the SmartNAV directly into the computer?

Do you have other USB Devices plugged in, and do they exhibit the same behavior?

There is a file c:\windows\setupapi.log, please send this file to support@naturalpoint.com and we can see what is going on with your system.

You can also call our toll free number 1-888-865-5535 and we can troubleshoot your problem over the phone.

In general if you have an issue with your unit it is best to contact us so we can work with you to resolve it.

Thank You,
Kevin

Although this comes close to thread necromancy, I currently experience the same problem that Bernhard did back then and can't seem to find a solutiuon on my own.

I installed the registry fix which changed the entry in the device manager from "usb device" to "NaturalPoint SmartNav 3", but the "the specified location does not contain information about your hardware" message still pops up every time I try to do a manual install.

Well, unfortunately part of the reason maybe is that you do not have a SmartNAV 3, but a SmartNAV unit. (according to the serial number you had posted)

The latest version of the software, which is compatable with your hardware is 2.51, which can be downloaded from here

Oh well, no big deal.

I had it on the shelf for about 2 years and when coming back to your site I thought "Wow, an All-in-one-all-models driver, I'll try it".

2.51 worked before and it seems it will continue to do so...

Thanks for the quick response

Yea, unfortunately the newer drivers/software just doesn't have the support for the older hardware.
