In our research institute, in Spain, we have developed a VR system based on optitrack 12 cameras hardware. The objetive is to work with fusion magnetic confinement devices and proteins simulations in real time, and some another nice aplications. The idea is to have a real time position of head and hands for the interaction and... it works great!
For research community people looking for positioning for CAVE systems: this is a good and cheap alternative.
The only "bad" of optitrack is that we work in linux and we need a threath opened between our linux architecture and the windows optitrack PC. But I'm sure that in a future linux drivers will be working.
Here is the VR working.
