I'm unable to import bvh or c3d into maya, says Unrecognized file type, so does that mean I can't use maya?

Not directly.

You would then need to use an intermidiate step, to get the data within Maya. Some of our customers have had good success goiung from Arena -> MotionBuilder -> Maya

Arena version 1.5, which should be out within 30 days or so, will support .fbx. That will probably be your best bet for importing into Maya. At that time, you can download the official Autodesk FBX plugin:

In the mean time, you should be able to get .bvh into Maya with a third party plugin. Just Google "Maya bvh" and you should find several possible solutions. Or, as Vincent mentioned, if you have access to MotionBuilder, it can be a good intermediary in the pipeline.

fbx sounds very good, in the meantime we'll use 3D studio and export to maya as FBX.

Thanks
