So in these videos it looks like it just a quick look to the side and then back again, no real flying around while looking around.

Are you able to control the vehicle while you are looking around? Or is it like BF42 where as soon as you engage the view toggle you loose all control of the vehicle?

Just tried it with the retail version + patch. Same lame system as BF1942. Using Mouselook disables the controls (except maybe throttle).
I suspect there is some old crapulent hack left from the original BF engine for mouselook. Seems like it traps all control inputs, rather than just the mouse inputs.

That said, trackir still rocks when hovering, or if you are on a stable course. Unfortunately these are rather vulnerable ways to fly. Trackir would really come into it's own when simultaneously flying, dodging and scanning, or when landing, banking or yawing... all dangerous operations with the controls locked.
Final opinion? I'm glad i got BF2 as a present (it's fun) and didn't pay for it (it's flawed). It's yet another case of what could have been. Other final opinion... trackir rocks, i really miss it in bf2.

Yeah, the Control Freeze sucks. I tried to make it look good for the vids..

Throttle still works though...

Blah, it could be SO much better.

can someone make a mod to bf2 that could unfreeze the controls or is that too much to ask for such a new game? What possible reason could there have been in the coding of the game to freeze input controls under mouse look?

Whilst I am dissapointed in the way the mouse look is programmed, I am not supprised. The whole control side of BF2 is sloppily programmed, with keys that cannot be remapped.

After a few weeks tbh I am becomming very disalusioned both with the game and with the BF2 community as a whole.

What a bummer. Native TrackIR support would greatly increase your situational awareness when flying. I hate being constained to just the forward view and the external views. Practically worthless.

Only the version 4 software will support the vector clip and expansion.
