TrackIR5 & Windows7, Where's the drivers, 5.0.b.final ?

Post by alan pfeil »

When will a driver be available for Windows7? I cant find anything in the website or forums. Will 5.0.b.final run OK?
I have TRIR5 software running fine with TRIR4 proclip hardware in FSX on a Vista system, only a couple of snags - especially the one described in TRIR4 forums of the Chase view scenery going the wrong way.
Now I have an Akoya running Windows7,an Intel Dual i3-530 CPU, 3Gb DDR3 Ram, and an nVidia GeForce 512Mb G210 graphics card. Not a top notch system by today's standards but it only cost 400 and it is blindingly fast with all the FSX scenery settings maxed out.
Whether the chase view glitch is still there I cant say because FSX is not recognised, nor is BOBII, the only other program I have that TRIR5 should work with.
The software runs well as in Vista but the camera shows only a yellow power Led centre top. The header shows the device TrackIR4 and its serial number, the default profile and the title as None. When FSX loads nothing changes, wheras in Vista it shows a 'Flight' profile and Flight Simulator X as title, with a green and a blue Led centre bottom on the camera.
I have un- and reinstalled TRIR5.0.b.final but no change. When the hardware is refitted, Windows7 detects and reports that the TrackIR4 driver has been installed. The installlog shows the OS to be 2k/XP but so it does in the Vista version.
It may not be anything to do with the above, but cccleaner shows a false registry entry for TrackIR5\TrackIR.exe, whereas the .exe file is actually named TrackIR5.exe. I cleaned it out but the reinstal put it back again.

Seems the main problem I had was with FSX being installed on an external drive which was G: in Vista, but D: in Windows 7. The FSX activation was corrupted so I could only use it for 30 minutes.
I had to reinstal FSX, SP1 and Acceleration on a different external drive; but then FSX refused to run, it loaded the scenery but then hung with the Desktop screen in full view. I swapped the drives over so it now uses the original instalation! Lo & behold, now TrackIR4 with ClipPro and 5.0.300 software runs OK but with some strange effects.
In the process I found a very wierd side effect of resetting
the Centre and Pause functions using the Windows & Application keys, which left me in a jet at 100 feet facing CentrePoint with FSX paused and the P key having no effect.
Still, TrackIR was still working! Perhaps I will write that up as a new topic or a TrackIR Story.
( The Chase view scenery problem is still there.)

MEA CULPA! I was running FSX with the TrackIR 5 software window open in the background with the Profile edit window open as welland the Gadgets running but not displayed.
What I forgot was the Trap function that prevents TrackIR Hot Keys being passed on to other programs using them.
I pressed G to raise the undercarraige and everything went beserk:
The Gadgets came up in front of the FSX screen ( actually it changed to a Window, so the Menus were no longer accessable ) and FSX went into Pause. Of course neither the undercart came up, nor did the P key end the Pause, nor Esc end the flight. However P opened a window from some annonymous Photo program across the middle of the screen.
Several other keys did very strange things - 1-8 started each of the programs in the Taskbar in order, counting from the left.
Really weird, something to do with allocating the right Windows and Application keys as HotKeys. Even more wierd, holding the left Mouse key down allowed all the keys to work normally in FSX or in a text entry window, but not in TrackIR; release it and back to chaos.
This does not happen with TrackIR 4 and FS2002 running on XP, on a laptop with no RWindows or App keys; as soon as Profiles Edit is closed down ( there is no edit key in TrackIR 5 ) the effect stops. OhOH. What happens if the Exclusive setting is used?

You can edit the hotkeys, under the advanced settings option.

Make sure you are running the applications at the same permission level - (right click on the exe for IR and FSX, then select run as admin)

My point was that in TrackIR4 there was a specific Edit process that shut down once deselected, so that the Trap function no longer stopped key stokes being passed on, provided no program was running that used TrackIR.

In the TrackIR5 software it appears that once Advanced Settings has been selected the Key Trap feature is still operative whilst the window is open even though no program is running. Hence the strange effects I mentioned.

If the Default Profile has the Trap effect active, whatever keys are set as HotKeys are not available to other programs. Though there must be more to it than that, for such weird effects to be produced, and it is difficult to reproduce them.

[ I realise the rest of this belongs in another Topic and will copy it to the Stutter/Flutter one - it's here in response to Vincent.]

The important thing seems to be that with Flight Simulator X in Windows 7,the TrackIR window should be minimised before running it.
I tried setting the Priorities to different but equal levels - using Task Manager - it did not seem to make any difference to the reported stutter - but when I tried to set the 'Run As Admin' option, in both TrackIR5.exe and fsx.exe the option was ghosted, even though I was running as Admin already.

The profile is still loaded, and is going to be trapping the keystrokes, unless the option is unchecked. I'm pretty sure that was the same method with the 4.xxx software.

There is a difference, within Windows Vista/7, between being logged in as an admin, and running the software as an admin.

Where you selecting the option within the exe properties, or the right click menu?

Hi Vincent, sorry for the delay in responding.

I was right-clicking the FSX.exe and TrackIR5.exe files, selecting properties/compatibility.
The entry for 'Run as Administrator' was ghosted, I later found out, because it had been set in the 'Change Settings for all Users' option. When that option was chosen it was not ghosted.
If cleared there, it became unghosted in the previous view.
