Capture volume inquiry

Post by Dragos »

Good Day.

My Name is Dragos Stanculescu and I am Technical Director at FUN labs (an independent console game development studio).

We are considering purchasing a body mocap bundle , however the space in which we would be setting it up is rather limited.

We would like to know if anyone whith experience regarding OptiTrack ARENA could make a bundle (and setup) suggestion based on an accurate 3d model and on image of our available office section (and what would the usable capture volume be).

I have tried going through support and after the initial e-mail exchange, the communication "died' (thinking to resort to the good ol' fashioned phone call) .

Eagerly awaiting your reply.

Here is a top down image of the work volume.
Approximate sizes are
8.6 meters total length;
4.2 meters widthA;
6.5 meters widthB ( it is not a simple rectangle);
2.55 meters height (except in a few marked areas where height is 2.02 meters) ;

PS: If this is not the proper support forum section to post this in please let me know.

Just ended the phone call to support, got the info. Thank you :)

Apparently with 12 or more wide angle cameras a 3 by 4 meters capture rectangle should be possible but that indeed quite small. By the voice tone I think the support person thought I was nuts for trying to set this up is such a small area :).

I guess a 3/4 meters would be okay for regular dialogue gestures between two characters, transitions from sit-prone-standing positions, some idle animations, shooting from standing positions but probably runs,jumps, walks, swords, hand to hand combat and such are out of question.

Will check back with our publisher contact, see if we can't get ahold of a larger area in the same building , as he whole idea was to have this in the same building where the dev team is :).

Again thank you for the feedback:).

Hi,

I'm a researcher at West Virginia University and I am planning to buy the OptiTrack system. My research involves recording human locomotion and reaching. My lab is 21 x 24 feet. I would like to have the largest capture volume possible to record humans walking. What system would you recommend, i.e. which cameras, how many, how to position them, which other hardware and software add ons?

Chers and thanks,
Valeriya

Hi Valeriya,

For the maximum capture volume, you'll want the camera with the largest FOV/coverage area, our S250e with the default 5.5mm lenses. That combination offers very impressive coverage--193% compared to the baseline V100:R2 coverage.

Camera count will likely somewhat be determined by your budget. Additional cameras provide better coverage, less dropped markers, larger volumes, etc. Depending on how things break down for you, I'd recommend:

$10k Range
12 V100:R2 Bundle

$15k Range
18 V100:R2 Bundle

$25k Range
12 S250e Bundle*

$40k Range
18 S250e Bundle*

* Either of these should be ideal solutions for you.

All of these bundles include ARENA software. If you opted for Tracking Tools instead of ARENA, the price would be around $1200 less.

Regarding software, what do you want to do with the data?

Do you want to stream it live, or do you want to save it out and then import into another application?

Do you want joint angle data, rigid body data, or individual marker data?

What application are you planning on taking the data into?
