Now two problems

Post by Crockett »

I've got TrackIR 5 installed on Windows 7 64 bit.

Along with looking down 90 degrees and seeing everything flipping all around the screen, I now have another problem.

When I look right 90 degrees, I don't have turn my head nearly as far as when I look left 90 degrees. It wouldn't be so bad but I have to really turn my head significantly further to look 90 degrees and it's almost too far to be able to see the computer screen.

Vincent, please help with both issues.
Thanks,
Crockett

All of the above suggest that you're having camera placement/angling issues--or potentially TrackClip/TCP placement issues.

Are you using a TrackClip, or TrackClip PRO?
When in the TrackIR software, with the viewport on the right in Camera View mode, what do you see?
- 3 green dots?
- Any red?
- If only 3 green dots, are they relatively centered vertically and horizontally?

If you upload a screenshot of the Camera View with your head comfortably centered on the monitor, that can also help us resolve potential issues here.

Thanks for the reply.

Your questions probably have given me the answer. I'm using the Trackclip and the TrackIR is on top of my monitor The TrackIR is higher than the Trackclip -- about 6 inches.

When I have the software open there are 3 green dots but they are not centered and there are no red dots.

I see that when I sit higher the 3 green dots become centered. I will adjust my chair so I sit higher. and see if that helps.

I would include a picture but I don't know how to include it.

I'll let you know how it works.

Thanks,

I'm now sitting so the Trackclip on my hat is only about 3 inches lower than the TrackIR on top of the computer monitor. But I've still got the problem with the screen shot flipping around when I look down.

How do I upload a picture of my seat position?

Got it fixed.

It appears that the TrackClip should be on approximately the same level as the TrackIR sensor, which is on top of my monitor. When I was having trouble, my TrackClip was 3 to 6 inches lower than the TrackIR so that the TrackIR had to look down to see the TrackClip. I also sit rather close to the monitor due to the configuration of my room -- so the angle the sensor looked down to see the TrackClip was rather severe. My Monitor is a big CRT 21 inch monitor and the TrackClip was mounted on the visor of my hat. I raised my chair as high as it would go but I couldn't raise up any higher to be on somewhat the same level of the TrackIR sensor.

I've got a set of headphones, so just on a thought it might work, I mounted the TrackClip on top of the headphones, so essentially the TrackIR is looking straight forward to see the TrackClip.

I also notice that when the TrackIR software is open and you're viewing the display -- there is a little box in the upper right hand corner called "camera". There are 3 green dots in a triangle in that box. I've situated those dots by moving the angle of the TrackIR sensor to the center of the box.

Now the problem is gone.

Assuming my suppositions are correct -- shouldn't the fact that the sensor shouldn't look down at too great of an angle and be on approximately the same level as the TrackClip be in the FAQ page?

Actually it is covered in section 3.5, hardware placement - of the manual.

It doesn't directly address being on a different angle from the TrackIR sensor. It just indicates you should be in front of the sensor by showing a picture showing a man on the same level. Nowhere does it address the sensor looking down at a angle to the TrackClip.

I still feel it should be addressed in the FAQ section.

Don't get me wrong -- I love this thing and it adds a whole new dimension to flight sims. Would I recommend buying the TrackIR -- absolutely!

I have this same concern. Currently, I'm using a 23 inch LCD screen.

I am considering buying a 32 inch LED flat screen for use with my PC. I should be about 2 feet away from my face.

My concern is that as the 32" screen will be taller, will the TrackIR sitting atop it be able to work well as the angle, looking down, will be greater as my head and TrackClip will be lower down.

I would like to hear the official word on this as well as from any other user who is using a bigger screen with their TrackIRs.

The ideal position, and placement, of the camera should be both horizontal, and vertically parallel with the TrackClip. This allows for greater range of movement, and better camera accuracy.

Being that close (2ft.), and at a sharp angle can/will hamper the range of movement, and the tracking points can be lost easily from within the camera's view.

I'll add that if you have a TrackClip PRO, you should be OK. The TCP has more range on the pitch axis, which is where you can run into the most trouble with an elevated TrackIR unit. Unless the TrackIR is > 6" above your head, I think that the TrackClip Pro can be tracked sufficiently from 2' away.

The standard TrackClip might be a bit limited on the pitch axis though, at that steep of an angle. Whether or not it's still viable will depend on both personal preference and the profile you're using.
