New User Experience
New User Experience
I don't want to waste anyone's time but I thought it might be helpful to relate my experience as a first time user.
Got Trackir 5 as a Christmas present. Had originally put my name down for a different product but my chosen supplier was unable to get stock so offered a deal on Trackir 5 Bundle.
Installation of software was no problem. Installation of Hardware seemed to be a problem as I spent some time trying to position the camera.
This seemed to be very sensitive to placement and I was getting rather frustrated trying it in different positions until I discovered the Hotkey for centralising the view.
Yes I did print and read the manual before installing and using, but did not connect the hotkey and its effect on camera placement. Perhaps a note in the manual in the hardware installation section might help future new users.
Using the Trackir solves all the gripes I had with flight simming. No more trying to operate the hat-switch to see where you are going, lower flaps, undercarriage and line up for final.....etc. Now I just look where I am going which is much more realistic.
To any new user, be patient and take time to set up and experiment with profiles as the rewards are worth it. It takes a little getting used to and I still find my thumb straying to the hat switch on occasion!
The bottom line after just over two weeks use is I would not be parted from my Trackir (without major surgery)

Re: New User Experience
Good points TerryB. I bought TrackIR 3 with Vector Expansion from another guy over in Aces High 2 and had it for a few weeks before deciding it was worth it to upgrade to the newest model.
I spent quite a bit of time just lurking on the boards here checking things out and reading a bunch to be sure that I knew what I was getting. I still have some issues with the profiles but then I am not always a RTFM type person.
Like you I would not be without TrackIR in my flight sims and possible in other games even though I have not tried it out in an FPS yet.

Just Like to add to TerryB's post. Just received this incredible piece of equipment this morning in the post. Downloaded 5.1 beta from site installed it and connected and it worked straight out of the box. Completed fistr flight and have to say it is an awesome experience being able to keep yout situational awareness just by moving your hear and not having to wory about taking a hand of the joystick to pres the space ket and move your view with the mouse.
Absoutely delighted.

The hotkeys are located under Advanced>Profiles. You can select the action from a drop-down menu and map it to your hotkey with the button next to that menu.

just received mine too. Love it. Really transform the experience of flying in FSX.
But i still don't quite understand the use of this "hotkey". Any detailed instruction.
Also, after exiting from FSX, I hv problem getting back to the software [ie cannot open its window again]

Re: New User Experience
The TrackIR software has 3 functions that can be bound to hotkeys. By default these are:
Precision mode: F7
Pause: F9
Center: F12
You can re-map these keys by editing your profile (advanced options)
F12 in particular is a very useful button. It snaps your current location and assumes that to be center. The benefit to doing this is that if you adjust the camera, or the way you sit, it allows you to decide what direction should be considered "straight ahead".

thank you very much Sir.
How about the other problem of not able to open the Track IR window again after exiting FSX?

Re: New User Experience
If you followed the instructions and minimised the TRackIR window before using FSX then I believe the default minimises it to the system tray. I find you have to right click on the icon in the system tray and select "minimise/maximise to tray" This puts an icon back in to the Taskbar that can be used to re-open the TrackIR window.
There might be an easier way but thats how I do it.
Hope this helps
