TrackIR software won't run

My TrackIR is about a year old and was working fine yesterday, but today the program just won't run. Nothing changed since yesterday, but now when I click the shortcut the program doesn't start at all, I just get a message saying:

"TrackIR 5.1 has stopped working
A problem caused the program to stop working correctly.
Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is
available."

I uninstalled the program and drivers, deleted the directory, downloaded the latest release and reinstalled, still won't run.
Actually, the software and driver I was using when it was working are the same ones I just downloaded.

TrackIR is listed in the Device Manager and says it appears to be working correctly. The driver listed is the most up to date driver.

The computer is Vista 32 bit with an Intel Core2Duo processor. My graphics card is an ATI 4850 and I have dual monitors.

Tiger, open up your task manager and check in the processes to see if there may be multiple instances of TrackIR running. If so close them out and try running again.

Might also try running TrackIR as Administrator. Right click the icon and select Run As Administrator.

Just a couple thoughts...

Thanks for the response Jerriko, but no luck so far.

TrackIR shows up in processes while the error window is being displayed, but that's the only time.

I'm the only one who uses the computer so I do everything as administrator all the time. I did check the shortcut box, but it didn't make any difference.

Here's a little more information:

I decided to try another uninstall/reinstall. I installed the software and tried running it before plugging in the TrackIR hardware.

The program still won't run, even before the hardware and drivers have been installed. Fortunately, this leads me to believe it's a software problem and the hardware is probably ok. Unfortunately, the TrackIR hardware won't do me any good if I can't run the software.

After my last post I downloaded version 4 of the TrackIR software. It seems to be working fine.

So, apparently, after having used version 5 for about a year, for some reason it will no longer run on my computer. It's kind of disappointing, version 4 is a major step backward, but at least I can play my games.

I just hope that NaturalPoint has some new software in the works.

We can test this to see if it's an issue with the OpenGL support provided by ATI drivers. Please contact support@naturalpoint.com to arrange for a remote desktop troubleshooting session.

Fixed it!

Mike, I sent an email to the support address you gave. I haven't heard back yet, but it looks like I've got the problem resolved.

I followed up on your idea that it might be a problem with OpenGL. I went back to a set of ATI drivers from 2009 and copied atioglxx.dll into the TrackIR5 directory. TrackIR version 5 is now running fine.

Now, back to flying the Black Shark. :-)

Awesome! Just found your email, too. What version of atioglxx.dll did you put in there?

Mike, I got your email and will send you the actual dll, maybe then you can post it for others to use. I doubt that I'm the only one who experienced the problem.

The package it came from is called "ATI Radeon 4850 9_10_vista32_dd.exe". I used 7-zip to extract atioglxx.dl_ and then used 7-zip again to extract that into atioglxx.dll. I then copied atioglxx.dll into the main TrackIR5 directory.

The old driver file was stored in my archives. I don't know if it's still available on the ATI (AMD) website.

Edit:
I often change file names when I put things in the archives so that I know what they are for. The file name of the ATI driver file is probably not exactly the same as the original name, but should be close.

Got it, tested, it's working. We're looking at possible fixes based on the difference between the two, additionally I'm trying to find out what ATI's stance on distribution of their files is.
