Switched from trackclippro to trackclip: bad response

Post by peppergomez »

So I got tired of all the cables and overall fussiness of using the trackclippro on my mic (and I don't wear my mic for single player sims). Switched to the trackclip on the Naturalpoint cap.

Problem is that now the response is all wacked. Where with the trackclippro it was smooth right off the bat and required very very little tweaking, now the default and smooth profiles translate head movements erratically and bizarrely. A slight head movement causes the trackir cursor to peg violently to one extreme to the other. One:One on the other hand worked smoothly/logically for a few minutes but then became similarly distorted in its responses.

I don't really know where to begin in terms of adjustments.

PS- Until I read the recent sticky about software errors due to triple buffering, I was getting immediate TrackIR software crashes, so I uninstalled TrackIR software and reinstalled the latest version, so I'm using a clean install with no presettings on my part.

My camera position is basically centered, I see three green dots and one red one (not sure what that red one indicates). The software recognizes whatever game is loaded (X3, Arma 2), TrackClip is the tracking target, profile is either Smooth, Default, or One:One (acts incorrectly for all of them). Speed is 1 and smooth is 10. I have tried changing these two but responses are still wacked.

Any advice would be much appreciated. Thanks.

Could you post a screenshot of your TrackIR program?

Hey Mike.

Sure- here you go. Might the red dot in the camera box indicate the reflector on the natural point cap that might be being obscured by the trackclip?

Hi Pepper, how did you get that screen shot in your post? I must have missed something, despite reading the FAQs, etc.

Hosted it on flickr

Anyone have any thoughts about what might be causing TrackIR to act so strangely?

Hi Pepper,
The red dot usely indicate a "fourth" light source or
a pollution light source that the software try to not take in consideration. But... if an annoying light source(red dots)
is near of the center of the target, it cause strange behavior.

hmmm...that's weird b/c there isn't another light source there where that red dot is, and the red dot moves along with the three green dots. I am wondering if it is the reflector on the naturalpoint cap?

That's 100% what it is. The naturalpoint cap has a retroreflective strip sewn into the bill that was intended for use with SmartNav or TrackIR cameras (in 2DOF dot tracking mode only). What's happening here is that the sewn in reflector is being mistaken for one of the actual reflectors which throws everything for a loop. Cover the sewn in reflector (simple masking tape should do the trick) and you should be good.
