trackir software v5.1 or 5.2 on launch says "error"

Post by markm75 »

I have the trackir (4) device.. it was working fine up until recently.. I believe I was ok with version 5.1 of the software initially, though I had to use the "tricks" to get the driver to install on win 8 x64 (reboot to allow unsigned drivers etc)..

5.1 was fine.. no issues..

Then suddenly the other day when I launch trackir v5, it says simply "error".

I tried updating to 5.2, no good.. i tried uninstalling the device driver and the software then rerunning 5.2 setup, still no good.

Any ideas what to look for here, since this error is very generic.. to say the least

Thanks in advance

I should add that on a different partition with clean windows 8, this is working fine..

And in looking at the event viewer there is actually an error in there after launch:

In the strangest of things, I tried one tweak, disabling the "enable triple buffering" setting in the opengl advanced 3d settings of the ATI control panel.

Now, suddenly trackir will work and launch again.

Its very strange because everything was fine, even with the old version, no changes and this ati setting has always been there.

Nonetheless, disabling that checkbox fixed the issue.

For some reason, disabling triple buffering has been known to fix ATI's often inconsistent OpenGL compatibility. It's a known issue, but I'm not sure where ATI is in terms of fixing it. The cause isn't specific to TrackIR, but rather to OpenGL. But, since the 3D viewport in the TrackIR software is OpenGL (unlike most games, which are Direct3D), users often don't see the same conflict in their games as they do the TIR interface.
