I had a devil of a time just now installing TrackIR_5.2.1.Final.exe. I had been enjoying using my TrackIR4 rig on DCS World until I spotted the "News" window on the TrackIR window. I downloaded the new software but when I tried to install it, I got a message saying that "MS_VC2005_Runtime_SP1_ATL_8.0.61001_x86" had failed to install. Then I got an error message "Error 1303. The installer has insufficient privileges to access this directory: C:\Users\Public\Desktop. The installation cannot continue. Log on as an administrator or contact your system administrator." even though I HAD run it as administrator!
Then I could not even install older TrackIR software as my program had been deleted during the failed install process! What a nightmare!
So I decided to reboot my pc, ran CCleaner64, cleaned the registry and tried again. I managed to download the "MS_VC2005_Runtime_SP1_ATL_8.0.61001_x86" file called "vcredist_x86.exe" and installed it manually. This time when I ran TrackIR_5.2.1.Final.exe, I still got the "MS_VC2005_Runtime_SP1_ATL_8.0.61001_x86 failed to install" message but at least the rest of the installation succeeded after looking like a false start.
I guess it is "all's well that ends well" but this was tough! I am just relieved that it finally got installed and it seems to be running properly at this moment.
If anyone knows what I was doing wrong, let me know.

Re: Hard to install TrackIR_5.2.1.Final.exe
It sounds like it was having a file permissions issue either caused by Windows or an anti-virus/malware program. Also, even if you are logged in as an admin sometimes you may still have to right click and choose Run as Administrator due to how UAC works. In some cases I have had success by copying the installer to a less protected folder (something other than Desktop, My Documents, or Program Files). Glad to hear that you got it working though!

Thanks for the reply, Jeff. You are very vigilant!
I will keep what you write in mind concerning the use of the administrator privileges.
Just for the record, I use Kaspersky Anti Virus and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware programs as well as Windows firewall.
Thanks also for the good forums.
