Hi Jim,

That sounds great!

What kind of remote interface do you use?
DLL, COM/DCOM, hooking?
I'd be interested by the SDK and the possibilities that it offers.

One could write a driver that maps movements to keyboard keys, so even simulators that don't offer built-in support might benefit from your product!

PS:
6DOF, does that mean Six Degrees Of Freedom? Does one dergree equal one axis?

Hi bhodi,
Any news from Oleg concerning your project?
Looking forward to hear from your news!

Best regards

Which project for Oleg?
I have not bugged him as to the Remote interface much because he is way deep into beta coding issues and I try not to overload him with info. However I'm waiting for the right moment to bring it up again.
As to my other project that I'm busy with...well that's Covered under a NDA and I'd have to be be put on the rack before I'd tell. Because it would get me banishment from Oleg's good graces The worst thing I can think of.

Hi bhodi,

Well I was referring to you sentence above in this thread that says:
"I am doing a little project for Oleg so I am in contact with him fairly often"

Sorry, I didn't know it was secret since you mentioned it.

But I'm interested even more!
Good luck anyways

cheers,

HI,
Sorry if my project with Oleg has to stay secret, It's just that Oleg is the Boss of info release's....however let me say that it deals with Oleg's passion to make sure that everything is accurate as he can make it, down to the last detail.

I have been a fan of this sim since before Oleg had a web board to post too and his english was very hard to understand because he was teaching it to himself at the time.
I beta tested and helped out in small ways and Oleg was nice enough to put my name in the manual in the Thank you section.....Oleg's is a class act and we are really lucky that he loves flight sims and not FPS's....LOL
Just to let you know what a flight sim/Il-2 nut I am here is a pic of my basement cockpit.

However these pics are old as I now have a new dash in with 26 toggle switches, a starter switch from a spitfire, a Bomb release from a P-39 and 4 levers for the new controls For pitch, mixture and supercharger and such.
I also have a P-47 throttle Quadrant that is going to be installed as soon as I rig up the electronics for it. Plus I have a line on a TBM gear and flap quadrant that I'd love to install.
The Pit has a Watercooled AMD 2400+ with a GF4600 that will be replaced with a NV30 on release.
That computer has only one thing other then XP pro on it.......IL-2.
This week end I'm going to tinker with making a USB powered active dot for Track IR.
I'll let you folks know how it goes.

Hey bhodi,

That's great stuff at your home! Seems that you don't have "resource problems" with all these recent items.

Unfortunately I can't afford these for the moment (wife, 3 children and building on my house).
I'm doing all my controls myself, too (rudder, stick, throttle)
They're still in a prototype state due to lack of time, but the pedals and the stick allready work with IL2.

Thank's for your info and good luck
Cheers

How are you interfacing all that into the game?
I've used about 5 diffrent ways over the years and I have plenty of info on what not to DO
If you or anyone else is intrested just post your question and I'll find a link or explain how I did it..
BTW making a 4 axis 4 button device is fairly easy...not any worse then a active dot setup.
As a matter of fact I have a link to a way to make a USB homemade 4 lever deal that should not run over $50 U.S.D.
If anyone is intrested just ask.

When you talk about 6 DOG prototype, you are talking about a head mounted display WITH stereo vision and 6 DOG right?

This is what flight simmers dream of.

Hello:

I have been away from the boards for the past week or so, sorry for the delay. I have been working on decreasing production time / cost of the trackIR.

To answer a few questions:

Schallmoser - we use Windows Messaging for the Remote Interface. We found that this is the best method to exchange data with other programs, as we can be the front end and do all the processing and then simply hand off movement commands to the host program. With a DLL or API the code is all built in, so if we wanted to make changes after it was released it would be a pain.

AFJmediaXS - The 6DOF system is still a head tracker with a standard monitor. It allows for you to move around as though you were in the cockpit, for example, you can look around the windshield pillars. Although many simmers think that a HMD (head mounted display) would be God's gift, it really wouldn't be. I have had the pleasure of using the best HMD's on the market ($100K) and the experience is not as good as a simulator with a large projection display, or conical projection display. In the real world you just can't get the full "wrap around" experience you would want, the FOV is usually about 35 degrees horizontal maximum. All the military simulators use rear or front projectors with overlapping panels or conical screens. Then you can actually see your stick and switch panel, a much better experience.

Software Update - Thought you all would like to know that we are working on version 2.0 of the trackIR software, this is a big upgrade and we won't have anything to show for quite some time, but it is in the works.

Hi Jim,
Thanks for the reply.
What will version 2.0 of TrackIR implement?
Are there any new features?
Will we (TrackIR owner) be able to download it for free?

Hi bhodi,
Well I'm not really interfacing it directly to IL2, but I'm using a standard joy driver 4axis4Buttons from Win98 instead.
I built the mechanics equiped with 470kOhm pots that are used at about only 90 (this way I don't need to deal with gears)

The only problem is that I'd like to have more than 4 axis to add trim, landing gear, prop pitch, toe brake.
Therefore I've put a game port card into my board to connect the other axes which works pretty fine.
However inside the IL2 controller setup I only see the yaw and roll since the rudder is on the second game port. In-game it works fine.
I'd like to see all my axis in the setup to fine tune the axis with the sliders just as I do with yaw and roll.
Maybe you know a way around?

I'll be very interested in your info about how to make USB controller!
is it better to make such a controller or just buy a gameport/usb adapter?

Best regards

I believe through the right optics a field of view much like the 260 deg human FOV would be possible.

With stereo vision and 6 DOF it would be a simmer's dream.

What is human FOV? 260 degrees? Each eye only has about 180 degrees FOV. The point where the two eyes cross for depth perception is about 90 degrees (depending somewhat on the size of your nose...hehe).

I think HMD's will improve enough in the near future to get the "wrap around" effect. Some day I'll want the wrap around experience...even if I have to build some dome room with projectors. I'll have to be rich to afford this though, so I still have hopes some brainiac will figure a way to do this HMD style.
