Looking into Top Corner, Loss of Tracking

Post by decker12 »

With my new TrackIR 5, and the regular clip on a baseball cap, when I look towards the top left corner, my viewpoint in my game usually goes a bit nutso, sometimes upside down, sometimes staring straight to the top.

When I view my sensors in the Camera view on the TrackIR software, I can clearly see that when I look to the top left, the top sensor and the left sensor on my hat kind of line up temporarily into one sensor, going Red, which is what apparently messes up the in-game view.

Any suggestions on how to avoid this? Should I mount the camera higher and point it downwards towards the brim of my hat?

Hello decker12,

The only way to resolve this issue will be to adjust your TrackIR, hat or seating position. Raising the camera slightly would likely do the trick.

Thanks for the reply. I have no problem raising the TrackIR and pointing it downwards. I can raise it a good foot or two above my monitor if need be by attaching it to the wall behind my monitor. That will make sure that the clip's dots are always seen by the TrackIR because it's looking at a very downward angle to the entire top of my hat.

Is there a limit or disadvantage to this?

decker12,

If you move it too high, it will make it so it won't read correctly in other areas. I would adjust it in smaller increments, such as 4 to 6 inches at first. You still want it to be as close to straight on as possible, while solving the tracking issue, and I know that can be difficult. Just remember to check the tracking in all angles after you move it. It wouldn't help solving one problem and creating two more.

I'll try raising the camera in small increments and pointing it downwards until I get a satisfactory result.

On a similar topic, for the TrackIR, Is there any advantage to applying additional "dots" (like the ones you sell in your store) to a cap to increase tracking accuracy? Or is the TrackIR 5 only able to see and use the 3 on my clip?

The elevated camera worked great all weekend. I built a little stand out of legos, of all things, and then used more legos to secure the camera mount onto the stand. I attached the stand to the top of my monitor using velcro tape. In the end the camera was elevated about 3 inches, which ended up being perfect.

decker12,

The TrackIR will only track the three dots, adding more would just cause the software to "bounce" between the dots that it is tracking. If it did that, it would cause the tracking to be very erratic. I would strongly advise against giving the camera more dots to track.
