Trackir5 in USB extension cable

Post by Hawss »

Not an electronics wizard here, but when my trackir 5 is plugged into a 10-foot usb extender cable, it does not work. Is this because there is too much of a voltage drop across the extender cable, and if so, is there a solution?

I managed to get the trackir sensor working when plugged into a usb pass-through on my gaming keyboard, which was also plugged into a 10-foot extender cable. However, since unplugging it from the pass-through, it no longer works when plugged back into the keyboard.

Any assistance with possible solutions would be much appreciated.

Hawss,

We don't recommend using standard extension cables because they don't often carry the needed power well. You can use an active USB extension, they are designed to do the trick. The reason plugging it into the keyboard worked is because the keyboard was regulating the power for the device. I would suggest getting a powered USB hub, one that plugs in to the wall. Running the extension you have to that, and running the TrackIR off of the powered hub.
