Head Offset When Creating Skeleton

Post by bob.piscopo »

When I create a skeleton, the head will be aimed a bit down and to the left, as if there is an offset from what would be expected from the actor's posture.

In the attached image, the forehead marker looks like it was placed above the actor's right eye, when it is actually placed in the center of his forehead.

I've tried experimenting with marker placement on the head, and the "Head Upright" setting, but I cannot seem to correct the issue. Any suggestions for how to solve this? Are there best practices for head marker placement?

Hey Bob,

So the forehead marker does not impact the orientation or position of the head in any way.

The top head marker does modify the pitch of the head. That can be disabled by going to the default settings and changing Head Upright to True. Image attached for reference.

The yaw orientation offset of the head is derived from a different in rotation of the performers head in relation to the chest during the creation process. That can be manually edited using translation and rotation tools found in the 3d viewport. First, enable the skeleton edit tool. Its highlighted on the right hand side of the image attached. Then use translation, rotation, and scale tools to make any modifications required.
This is may be done on a single frame in edit mode so your talent doesn't have to hold a Tpose while you make changes. (Note: make certain to play at least one frame forward after making changes in edit mode for them to take effect.) Assets modified in edit mode will not propagate throughout the rest of your takes or update assets in live mode. If you did this process in edit mode you must export the skeleton via context menu on the skeleton asset in the project pane. Then import it when in live mode.

Please let us know if you have any additional questions.
