Setup Failed 0x80070666

Hi,

Been grinding on this all morning and looking for some help. I was notified of the 5.5.3 update while the software was in use by MS Flight Simulator. It didn't occur to me that running the installer while in the Flight Sim setup screen would cause a problem. I downloaded the installer and ran it. It told me I had a previous version and I needed to uninstall it. I did that using Windows Add and remove programs. The uninstall failed because the software was in use. I closed flight sim and tried again, but the software was no longer in add and remove programs. Running either the 5.5.3 software or the 5.5.2 installers gave me a "Setup Failed" message. The error is 0x80070666 - Another version of this product is already installed. Installation of this version cannot continue. To configure or remove the existing version of this product use Add/Remove Programs on the control panel.

I have tried the following:
- manual removal of the Appdata
- removal of the trackIR folder from x86
- export and removal of the NaturalPoint reg key
- TrackIR is unplugged.
- System restore to yesterday and subsequent successful uninstall of trackIR from add/remove

Despite all of this I am still receiving the same "0x800706666" error from both the 5.5.3 and 5.5.2 installers. I suppose some supporting software or some other dependency might be causing the problem but I'm not sure where to even start with that. Are there some manual uninstall uninstall instructions I might try, or some other troubleshooting steps? Thanks in advance. I did try to search google and this forum but I get time out errors from the forum whenever I search. Here is the log file in case it helps. Thanks in advance for any advice you can provide.

Hi mfishco,

Thanks for reaching out. I think we've seen other users with this issue and it might be caused by improper or unsuccessful uninstall. Note, if you run the installer again for the currently installed version then it gives you an option to uninstall. This might be a safer method for uninstallation than using Windows add/remove programs. However, generally, you should just be able to run the installer for a newer version which should also properly uninstall the current version and install the new version on top. Have you tried this?

It sounds like you've already tried a bunch of things we might already suggest. I looked up that 0x80070666 code and it seems related to the Micorsoft Visual C++ Redistributables. Can you try downloading the latest version of the MVCR here?:

The latest should be the x64 version 14.40.33816.0 (2055,2017, 2019 and 2022).

You can follow these steps below:

1. Unplug the TrackIR from your computer.
2. Remove TrackIR from add/remove programs.
3. Remove NaturalPoint Drivers from add/remove programs.
4. Delete NaturalPoint folder from Program Files x86.
5. Delete NaturalPoint folder from %APPDATA% location. (AppData is a hidden folder)
-C:\Users\[Your.User.Name]\AppData\Roaming\NaturalPoint.
6. Reboot PC.
7. Download the latest installer from our website.
-The latest download will also have our latest USB Drivers.
8. Right-click and install as an administrator.
9. Locate the Track IR 5 Icon on your desktop, Right-click on it and select 'Run as Administrator'. (This only needs to be done the first time.)

You may also need to install the latest version of the C++ Redistributables: https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/cpp/w ... w=msvc-170.
