I’ve got a few questions about using Motive, and I’m really hoping some of you awesome folks can help me out. Big thanks in advance!
1. Custom Skeleton Markerset for Hand + Body Tracking
So here’s the deal: I’m working on full-body motion capture, specifically for humans. I know there are some ready-made Skeleton Marker Sets out there. Right now, I’m using a Manus + Core setup—but let’s just say the finger tracking is… not exactly reliable.
I’d like to build a custom template using optical tracking for both the body and the fingers. There’s that Core + Active Fingers (62) preset, but it only has markers on the fingertips. I’d like to do something a bit more detailed, like putting markers on the middle segments of the fingers too. For the body, I’m thinking of using the Biomech (57) layout.
Now, I came across this Trained Markersets feature—sounds promising, but I honestly can’t find any solid tutorials or guidance on how to actually make it work. Does anyone know if it’s possible to use this to make a full custom template, like the ones built-in, where you just slap on the markers and get a skeleton out of it?
2. Skeleton Hierarchy – is it flexible?
Another thing I’ve been wondering: are the current skeleton templates locked to a single hierarchy? For example, it looks like the spine and neck only have one joint each. Is that fixed, or is there a way to add more segments? Having just one joint for the spine/neck seems like it might make motion a bit stiff, especially for the lower back and neck.
3. Finger/Body Capture Tips?
If anyone out there has tips or better setups for finger or full-body capture, I’d love to hear them! We’ve got a lot of data to capture, and manual cleanup is both time-consuming and expensive. So yeah… apologies in advance for all the questions, and thanks a ton for taking the time to read through my rambling.
If you’ve got any insights or want to chat further, feel free to reply here or drop me an email at 18706727838@163.com.
4. Side note: Qualisys experience
Slight tangent, but I used the Qualisys system before, and I have to say—I really liked their Custom Skeleton tool. You could design a marker template, collect the data, export it to Maya for custom constraints, and then bring it back into the motion capture software as a preset. Super clean and easy.
In comparison, the Trained Markersets feature in Motive feels a bit… clunky? Not as user-friendly as I hoped. Constraints tend to misbehave, and the whole workflow just isn’t as smooth.
Anyway, that’s all from me! Thanks again, and wishing you all smooth captures and minimal marker drift!
Best,
Jerry Song
