How does geodata relate to OptiTrack systems?

Post by Laure55 »

Hi everyone,

I’ve been learning about OptiTrack and its motion capture capabilities, and something I’ve been wondering is—how (if at all) does geodata come into play with these kinds of systems? :?

I know OptiTrack is usually used indoors for tracking human movement, robotics, and even virtual production. But could geospatial data be integrated for larger environments, outdoor setups, or combining mocap with mapping and positioning tools??

Has anyone tried linking OptiTrack data with GPS, GIS, or other geolocation systems for hybrid applications—maybe in drone tracking, autonomous vehicles, or biomechanical studies done outdoors??

I’d really love to understand if there’s any overlap between these two areas, or if they generally stay separate because of how precise but localized mocap systems are..

Thanks in advance for any insights! ;)

This is super interesting! I imagine syncing OptiTrack data with GIS could be really powerful for outdoor biomech or even AR experiences. Anyone working on something similar?

Yes, researchers and developers have been exploring these types of hybrid applications, especially in advanced areas: In a hybrid setup, OptiTrack can be used to accurately guide the drone during takeoff and landing in a controlled indoor environment, while the GPS and IMU (Inertial Measurement Unit) take over guidance when the drone is out of range. This can also be used to calibrate the GPS and IMU sensors against the high-precision OptiTrack data.
