Prime 13 vs. 13w

Post by cge »

Are Prime 13 and 13w the same camera with a different lens, and can a 13 be converted to a 13w with the LENS0023 lens? If so, I’m assuming the lens would just screw in, or are specialized tools or techniques required?

Also, is there a reason why the LENS0023 would not work with Flex 13 cameras?

Ok, after more research, it appears a previous model of Prime 13 had 2 rings of smaller IR LEDs, which didn’t allow a wide lens with a larger diameter to fit, so a single ring of larger LEDs was introduced to fit the wider lens. It also appears this newer model is now also sold as the Prime 13 (PX13.LENS0032.FSBP).

I’m guessing the Flex 13 in its current state also won’t fit the wider lens, although it would make so much sense it if did since people buying the more budget-friendly cameras also may not have the budget for a larger space. It also looks like replacing the lens involves disassembling the camera.

Is it possible a 3rd party wider lens will work with Flex 13?

Are the OptiTrack Prime 13 and Prime 13W basically the same camera with different lenses?
In short: not exactly. They share the same imager resolution (1.3 MP), frame rate (240 fps) and general “Prime 13” family identity.
However:
The Prime 13’s stock lens gives a narrower field of view (FOV ~42°–56°) while the Prime 13W is explicitly designed for an ultra‑wide FOV (~82° × 70°) using a 3.5 mm lens as stock.
The lens mount and optical path may differ in ways beyond just “swap in a new lens” (for example, sensor image circle size, IR filter design, calibration, imager format, internal optics/housing).
Because of that, while they look similar and share many features, the “W” version is optimized for wide‑angle coverage, and that might involve more than simply screwing in a different lens.
So you cannot assume a Prime 13 can be converted into a Prime 13W simply by swapping the lens, unless OptiTrack specifically documents that as a supported upgrade. I did not find documentation saying the Prime 13 can be retrofitted to “W” status just via lens swap.
