If the USB Rom gets corrupted it reverts back to the oringina base USB ID which is what the TrackIR used as well.

So it's unusable, no choice but to replace it with the latest & greatest, right? Assuming I'm willing to take the chance, I had 2 TIR2's and 100% failure rate - not encouraging

I'm gonna install a new usb 2.0 card in my PC this weekend, and try it on that, but I don't think it will help any.

Thanks for the time you've spent with me Rick, I appreciate it!

Don't be mad Harry. All Companies with game controller forums have people writing about problems they have.
That's the nature of support forums mate.
What you have to think about is all the other lucky buggers who never have a need to go to them.
To be honest after using TIR I'd rather risk having it die on me than never knowing what I'd missed. And probably like yourself; I don't have money to throw away.
This is a real long shot but have you checked the contacts in the USB plug to make sure they're clean. Sometimes a contact can look ok but slight oxidisation can build up inhibiting the voltage. Could be your power problem?
I'm a telecom engineer and see this all the time on peoples phone jacks (even when left plugged in). Get a cotton bud in there with alchohol based cleaner.
As I said though, it's a long shot.
Good luck mate.

Hi Toady, thanks man

But I'm not "mad" like you're thinking - just a little disappointed with my experience. Every other peripheral I've had has worked flawlessly with only one exception, and some I've had for 10 years or more and they've survived all the abuse I can throw at 'em

That one exception was a Microsoft Retardi-Mouse (Intellimouse in other words) that wouldn't even INSTALL on my Windoze ME system. It went right back the same day, replaced with Logitech and I've never looked back. Whenever I get a new mouse it is Logitech, won't even consider Microsoft. Logitech products are ROCK SOLID in my experience.

As far as what you said about never knowing what you'd missed, I agree 100%! Truthfully I don't regret the TIR, just regret I've not been able to count on it. In the flight sim world, I guess finding TIR is a lot like finding the "perfect woman". I just wish she'd stick around, ya know?

I'll try your idea of cleaning with alcohol, might make a difference, maybe not. Don't know if it's a power issue though, the red light on top lights up nice and bright, the blue light underneath lights up BRIEFLY when I plug it in, and the device is recognized by Windows as a TrackIR. But all I get in the software is "No Data".

That incorrect ID worries me also, based on what Rick said. It should have the TIR2 ID#, not the one for original TIR. Frankly I don't see how a power problem could cause it to send the incorrect USB ID. If it was power, I'd think it would send NO ID at all.

Thanks again for encouragement, I haven't given up - just need to get RICH 1st

OK, tried the cleaning followed by complete uninstall/reinstall. No joy

Well was worth a try, thanks for the idea!

I'm like you with Logitech now. Had about three intellimouse's and recently changed to the Logitech MX laser. Great piece of kit.
My problem was I remembered when Logitech was at the cheap low quality end of the market and Microsoft still (kind of) cared.
As for the 'Perfect Woman' I wouldn't know. I'm married.
Keep us informed mate.

OK, brought home a spare PCI USB 2.0 card from work and tried that. As I thought, no difference

In a way, I'm sorry I ever heard of TrackIR, once you've used it in a flight sim, it is a MUST-HAVE device, as indispensable as a joystick or flight yoke. Doing without it is like trying to go back to flying via the keyboard...

My experience has been that the device is just too "fragile" to be relied on. My 1st one worked less than a month, the replacement less than 3 months.

One day when I'm rich and can afford to possibly throw $200 away, I may try the TrackIR 20 Hopefully by then you guys will have it sorted out to where it's as reliable and dependable as any other game controller...

In the meantime I won't be playing any more flight sims - all I can say is thank the Supreme Being the thing don't work in FPS games or I wouldn't be able to enjoy those either.
