Need help getting my TrackIR2 working again
Need help getting my TrackIR2 working again
OK I realize this is a dead forum what with TIR3 and TIR4 out. But I can't get my TIR2 working no matter what, hoping someone can help if they read this.
I got my 1st TIR2 in Nov 2003, it worked great for a month then died of a hardware failure, see my post here if you're interested in what happened:
http://forums.naturalpoint.com/cgi-bin/ ... 2;t=000057
NaturalPoint immediately sent a replacement unit in Jan 2004 when I returned the bad one, and it worked great for 6 months Then I stopped flying.
OK, I'm getting a new PC next week, dual-core Intel 955 EE, 7800GTX SLI, 2gb dual-channel DDR2 SDRAM/667mHz, 360gb RAID 0, and needless to say I'm pumped up to play stuff I ain't touched in a while including FS 2004.
So I hooked up my TIR2 just to practice getting it set up (I've reformatted C: since last using it) and it DON'T WORK
The install went smoothly, no problems or errors, TIR2 is properly detected when I plug it in.
But when I run the software (version 3.13) all I see is "No Data", and on the tracking screen there is NOTHING. Not even the black window where the camera's image should appear.
There is no error when I run the software saying the device is not found and there'll be no mouse control, so it DOES see the camera apparently.
The LED on the top is red at all times (isn't it supposed to turn green when it's tracking something?) and the blue light at the base which is supposed to be on (iirc) in enhanced mode does NOT appear, whether in mouse or enhanced mode. That blue light WILL come on for 1 or 2 seconds if I unplug it then plug it back in, but then goes off again.
There is NO motion detected on either the Motion or Tracking screens.
The illumination LED's are "On", Tracking Preset is set to "Dot".
Also the device appears properly in Device Manager, under USB Controllers.
The TIR2 Serial # is 013355. I'm running Windows XP Home, SP1 on a Dell Dimension 8250 w/3.06gHz P4 HT, 1gb RDRAM.
Again, if it matters, I've done a reformat/reinstall of Windows since last time it worked.
Anyone got any suggestions? I'm eager to fly again, and CAN'T fly without TIR I'd really like to get the TIR4 but I'm cautious considering I've had 2 TIR2's and major problems with both...
TIA for any help!

Re: Need help getting my TrackIR2 working again
Hi again Harry.
Are you using a reflective dot or the track hat? Which ever it is, is the reflec still reflecting? Everything gets grubby eventually.
The tracking window wont come up unless it see's a reflec or light source.
If in doubt;
((WARNING-Rick & NP will scream at me for this))
hold a pencil or small light a good distance away and see if the sensor see's it and brings up the tracking window. If not, slowly bring it closer.
If it does its a good indication the reflec isnt being seen.

Re: Need help getting my TrackIR2 working again
Hi Toady, thanks for the reply
I'm using a reflective dot, the large one, that is 1/2" square (12.7mm for you guys over the pond ) Also tried the track hat and no luck with either one.
You're right, the reflector isn't spotless but if the TIR was functioning it SHOULD pick it up. I've waved all manner of items in front of it at varying distance, nothing is picked up at all.
Even did the ultimate test, waved a burning cigarette at it and still nothing. Back when it was working, it would track on a cigarette like you wouldn't believe! I had to refrain from smoking while flying for that reason, back when it worked...
The tracking screen is totally blank, there is not even the black square that represents the camera view. If I unplug-replug the TIR while software is running and tracking screen is up, the black square WILL appear, but status is still "No Data" and nothing is visible. Used to be able to wave my hand in front of it and see the motion. But now, NOTHING
And yes, you're right, I DO want the TIR4 But for $179 I want something I can count on to work reliably for years and my experience with TIR so far leads me to believe I won't get that.
I'm gonna write support tonight and see if they can offer any suggestion to get it working. I've seen an error in the C:\Windows\SetupAPI.log entry for the driver install that I think may have something to do with it, apparently a missing or incorrect entry in npusb3.inf. And looking at npusb3.inf, the hardware ID referenced in SetupAPI.log *appears* to reference TrackIR, and NOT TrackIR2. I'm wondering if I've got a bad .inf file maybe?

Re: Need help getting my TrackIR2 working again
Hi Harry
My tracking window doesnt appear until it sees something (stays greyed out) thats why I mentioned the reflec or light test.
My wife would stub my ciggy out on my forehead for smoking indoors so cant try that one.
Good luck with support and hope they can help. When I start going too far into 'inf' files its normally time to fire up Dr Watson.
And dont get me started on Imperial/Metric measurements. Old enough to get taught both and confused by it all.

Re: Need help getting my TrackIR2 working again
What does the device show up as in the device manager? Also which version of the software are you using? 3.13?
Re: Need help getting my TrackIR2 working again
Hi Rick, yes running v3.13. Have also tried v3.03 with same results.
Under device mgr, there is one entry for TrackIR under "Universal Serial Bus controllers", it is listed as "NaturalPoint TrackIR". Under "Properties" the device is listed as "enabled". Following is listed on the "Driver" tab:
Driver Provider:....NaturalPoint
Driver Date:.........Not Available
Driver Version......Not Available
Digital Signer.......Not digitally signed
Under "Driver Details":
Driver Files:.......c:\Windows\system32\npusb.sys
Provider:...........NaturalPoint
File Version:......1.30.0000
Copyright:.........Copyright 2004
Digital Signer:....Not digitally signed
There is also an entry for TIR on the 1st USB Root Hub under "Universal Serial Bus controllers" when the device is connected. "Power" tab shows:
Description:...........NaturalPoint trackIR
Power Required:...0 mA
Here's the relevant section from c:\Windows\setupapi.log if it's any help. There appears to be an error toward the end, I've pointed out where it is:

There is also an entry for TIR on the 1st USB Root Hub under "Universal Serial Bus controllers" when the device is connected. "Power" tab shows:
Description:...........NaturalPoint trackIR
Power Required:...0 mA
Here's the relevant section from c:\Windows\setupapi.log if it's any help. There appears to be an error toward the end, I've pointed out where it is:

Thanks for any help you can give!
Re: Need help getting my TrackIR2 working again
The INF file that it's missing is located in the following folder:
C:\Program Files\NaturalPoint\TrackIR\Drivers
See if you can manual point to that location to install.

Re: Need help getting my TrackIR2 working again
Hi, Rick I don't have a "Drivers" folder under "C:\Program Files\Naturalpoint\" and there are no .inf files in the Naturalpoint folder at all. Yes, "Show hidden files and folders" is checked, and "Hide protected operating system files" isunchecked.
I *do* have NPUSB3.inf in C:\Windows\Inf though. Don't know a lot about .inf files, but it looks like the ID of the device (USB\VID_0547&PID_1002) is listed in the [Strings] section as trackIR and NOT trackIR 2. Mine is TrackIR 2, would that make a difference?
Thanks for your help!

Re: Need help getting my TrackIR2 working again
That is an issue... If the device is a TrackIR 2, which I did verify by your serial number and REV data. If it comes up as "USB\VID_0547&PID_1002" then either you are plugging it into a USB port that may not be giving out enough power for the device or the PROM has gotten corrupted on the board itself.
Are you using it with a hub of any kind or using it with a laptop? Always be sure to use the USB ports on the back of your PC as well.

Re: Need help getting my TrackIR2 working again
Yes, if you check the setupapi.log I posted, there are 2 device ID's referenced (I'm assuming the usb\vid numbers are a device ID that is sent by the device when it's plugged in?) The two ID's are:
usb\vid_0547&pid_2235
Which is one of two "NaturalPoint Loader" listed in NPUSB3.inf - is that the right one for TrackIR2? Not sure why there's 2 of 'em.
Other is:
usb\vid_0547&pid_1002
Which is "TrackIR".
I used UltraEdit32 to list all lines containing "usb\vid" and those are the only 2 ID's I found.
OK, I'm running on Dell Dimension 8250, I'm not using a hub (though I DID try a powered hub after repeated attempts failed) - that didn't work either
I've used several of the USB ports on the back of the PC both with and without extension cable with no luck.
Also tried the 2 front USB ports with no results.
In addition, I took it to work and tried it on my Dell Dimension 4100 there, wouldn't work on that machine either. In the setupapi.log from the attempt on the 4100, the same 2 ID's listed above are referenced. No reference to USB\VID_131D&PID_0150 which is the correct one for TrackIR 2, right?
Both machines running XP SP1.
About power - how would I know if my USB ports aren't supplying enough? All other USB devices work fine.
As I mentioned in earlier post, when the TrackIR is connected, under the USB Root Hub "Power" properties for the TrackIR, the power required is listed as 0 mA. Does that suggest anything? Seems like I should see a number there.
As far as the prom being corrupted, how could it get corrupted in a way that would cause the original TrackIR ID to be sent? My 1st TrackIR died totally after 3 weeks, and it WAS fried, and when I'd try to reinstall it it simply showed as "Unknown USB Device" in the setupapi.log. No valid ID of any sort. I've got that log posted on the TrackIR2 forum somewhere.
Thanks for the help, hope we can get something figured out!
