Remove the TrackIR software by doing the following:
a. Click "Start"
b. Click on the "Control Panel"
c. Click "Add/Remove Programs"
d. Find "TrackIR" and click "Change/Remove"
e. Once launched it will give the option to completely remove it.
f. Delete the NaturalPoint folder at the following location, C:\Program Files\NaturalPoint
g. Download and reinstall the software from the following location,
http://www.naturalpoint.com/trackir/06- ... nuals.html

When running the install, allow the PC to uninstall the old INF files.

Hi Vincent,
Sorry - perhaps I wasn't specific enough & led you astray with reporting where the device was showing with the build 29 software.

The problem I have is that I have downloaded the latest software (4.1.034 & 4.1.035 Beta at the initial post & now 4.1.035 final) and after I :

a. Clicked "Start"
b. Clicked on the "Control Panel"
c. Clicked "Add/Remove Programs"
d. Found "TrackIR" and click "Change/Remove"
e. Used the option to completely remove it.
f. Deleted the NaturalPoint folder at the following location, C:\Program Files\NaturalPoint
g. Allowed the PC to uninstall the old INF files.

Then - installed the new software - the software fails to launch automatically, though it shows as a process in the task manager, and can't be launched while that thread is active.

If I kill the process, I can launch the software (list of supported games is updated - it is the new software) - though it takes a very long time to load (& hangs when closed & will only close if the thread is killed through the task manager).

When I start the software & plug in the unit, the system asks if I want to proceed though there's no MS digital signiture & after clicking yes the device is installed.
While the signature dialogue box is open & while being installed by the system, the TIR green LED shows lit, but as soon as the device installation completes, the LED goes out, & the software fails to detect the TIR unit (no device detected), even though the device manager says the unit is working correctly, and the driver shows in properties as the correct driver.
With the newer software, the device manager lists the device as a TIR_4 unit, with build 29, as a TIR_3...
With the 35 build, the TIR shows as a (functioning) natural point device rather than under usb devices (though as a usb device with build 29 software).

In various efforts to make the new software recognise the unit I have uninstalled software & hardware numerous times, re-started & shut down again before re-installing, installed it to the default folder & folders with other names (deleting each folder between attempts), & on other drives, forced the unit to re-load the driver from the device properties, tried using other USB ports, tried using the registry cleaner from this site (which said no device to fix)& manually checked that there are no naturalpoint keys in the registry after uninstalling (none).

I'm using build 29 at the moment because if I revert to an earlier version of the software, the unit works fine again, so I went back to the build 29 version so that I could at least keep using the TIR unit in some games till I found a solution for the build 35 version

Any other applications running on the system, in the background?

It loads as a TrackIR3, under NaturalPoint, with the newer drivers and as a TrackIR 4 under USB in the older software?

In the following folder location, C:\Program Files\NaturalPoint\TrackIR4\Profiles, what is the file size for each profile?

What version of the TrackIR software are you running?

Applications - 1 "OSDMain"
Processes - 67 (mostly oracle / java related :-)

It loads as a TrackIR3, under NaturalPoint, with the newer drivers and as a TrackIR 4 under USB in the older software?

No the other way around. Old software sees it as TIR_3, and installs as a USB device, with new software as TIR_4 and as a naturalpoint device.

what is the file size for each profile
2KB

What version of the TrackIR software are you running?
Currently, TrackIR_4.1.029.Final, but the new versions I have tried are TrackIR_4.1.034.Final, TrackIR_4.1.035.Final, and TrackIR_4.1.035.beta.01.developer
Build 28 works also. Haven't tried anything between 29 & 34

Can you send me screen shot of the device showing up as a TrackIR 3, and as a TrackIR 4, as well as screen shots of the trackIR main tab, with each install

I had the same problem(s) for several months starting this Spring and found a solution by going back to build 30. I am using Win2000 Pro.

I think the problem is so difficult to track because of some increasing incompatibility with Win2000 in the last 2 or 3 builds (build 29 might be the last fully Win2000 functional).

I ran the Trackir 3 unit (with Vector Expansion) for nearly 2 years with no problems. Then this Spring I started having problems with exiting the Trackir program. upon hitting the "x" to exit I would get a "program not responding" message and I would tell it to quit anyway. No big problem.

But, this Summer I saw a new build was available so I hit the auto-update in the Trackir program. Total failure to connect to the net. So I downloaded the whole new build and installed it.

Never got it to recognize the unit. Some few times the program would show up on screen (and show as a running program) but most of the time it would never show on screen (and just show as a running process). Never worked. (I did multiple deletions, multiple new build downloads, followed all the manual instructions, etc. NOTHING, after years of happiness with the Trackir3 and Vector Expansion).

After being stumped for several months, I tried again with the latest build last month. still nothing doing. Then I found this forum and saw that other win2000 folks were having the same problems, so I dropped back to Build 30 and have been in business again. When I look at your new build dates in 2008, and the periods when things started to flake out, I see a match.

Win2000 is a great OS, but with the latest driving Sims not loading under it, I am now building a new computer with Vista.

It could still be trying to use the older drivers, when running the newer software.

Is the device plugged into the system, when you reinstalled?

Did you try updating the drivers manually?

As I said, I am moving to Vista. I solved my Win2000 incompaitbility problems by going back to build 30.

Yes, the device was unplugged when the newer builds were installed.

The newer downloaded builds have an install program that first uninstalls the older build. I did the uninstall numerous times and had it erase all old stuff. Then I did a manual search of the drive for older versions of the program (in different folders or wherever) and manually deleted. I did manual search for trackir device drivers and deleted all old drivers. Then I installed the newer build. Never detected the unit and never worked.

Then I went back and installed build 30 and it worked (and still works) again on Win2000 including Vector expansion).

I would just suggest that anyone on Win2000 who has problems just go back to build 30 until they upgrade to a newer version of Windows.
