I see our OptiWand Kit comes with a 250mm and a 500 mm mounting rail. But I can not find documentation on why one would be used over the other.
I'd suspect it has to do with volume of the tracking area; if so recommendations on volume/wand length would be useful.

It's definitely the volume of the tracking area.
250mm: Useful for small volumes such as facial tracking or desktop tracking, when wanding will occur close to the cameras.
500mm: Useful for larger volumes where wanding will occur farther from the camera.
