Track IR wont work
Hi
I had my Track IR Delivered today, but I am having problems with it - in that it wont work.
I have outlined below what I did - can someone please tell me where I went wrong? (ps - my track IR box had no CD or manual in it - just the unit, usb extender, dots and a pad - is this normal? - the unit was still sealed when I got it)
1 - I picked up version 2.0 software - from the website
2 - I installed this
3 - I rebooted
4 - when windows had loaded (windows XP Pro) I plugged in the USB extender - the other end was plugged into the unit already.
5 - Windows XP shows a message at the systray saying a usb device has been detected
6 - shortly after this the following window opens - http://homepage.ntlworld.com/neill.johnson/Image1.jpg - the top left one - (found new hardware wizard)
7 - click next
8 - this window is shown - http://homepage.ntlworld.com/neill.johnson/Image2.jpg
9 - checked device manager - it doesnt seem to pick up properly what the device is - see http://homepage.ntlworld.com/neill.johnson/Image1.jpg
I have tried uninstalling, ghosting (if I go back to a clean install image of XP - taken just after XP install was completed - it does work - however I dont want to go through 2 months of getting my system back up to speed), switching usb slots, connecting without the extender, rebooting - the works and all it ever says is what is shown in device manager.
As far as I can see from the manual I have followed procedure.
If I try to run the software I get the following messages (in that order) -
http://homepage.ntlworld.com/neill.johnson/Image3.jpg
http://homepage.ntlworld.com/neill.johnson/Image4.jpg
http://homepage.ntlworld.com/neill.johnson/Image5.jpg
Any help much appreciated
Thanks - Neill

Hmm. What is your serial #, I will see who you bought it from, should have been a CD and manual in the box.
It seems like you followed correct procedure for the install. Can you go back in time, to before you installed our software, using System Restore? This is the most effective way to deal with a bad install. Always choose the default option when XP is installing the unit. Can you try to install it on another machine, to see if the hardware is bad?

The serial number is 003930 - I purchased it in the UK from RC simulations.
I have system restore disabled on my system - but I have been using Norton Ghost to go back to various different images of my C:\ drive. I have found that I can get the track IR unit working only if I go back to a Ghost image of my C:\ I made straight after I installed windows XP - this is an image with no drivers, service packs etc installed - just a clean windows install.
However - on any other install of Windows XP I am getting the issues I describe above - the unit being recognised only as a USB device - and it can find no software for the hardware to run properly.
The unit does seem to work - when I reloaded the ghost image I refer to (clean XP install) I have been able to get it running and I tired it out using IL2 (WW2 flight sim) and the mouse was moving around ok. What I cant understand is why it wont install correctly on my current system setup? very perculiar and I cannot think what is different between the two - apart from the obvious such as service pack 1 and drivers from other hardware etc.
Hopefully someone may be able to spot a cause for the issue
Thanks for the advice - Neill

Try the next oldest version of the TIR software, that MAY work.
I think it's best, also, to have win98 installed on a gaming machine, even if it's just as a duel boot second OS for testing things on. Most problems with gaming and gaming hardware seem to be connected with XP.
Cheers

BD6Hi
Do you know where I can download an older version of the software? I have looked on the downloads page and all I can see is the version 2.0 software.
Regarding Windows 98 - I have used that for many years and I agree it is great for games - however I switched to Windows XP after trialing it for some time, and aside from this problem Windows XP runs flawlessly for me.
Thanks for the advice - Neill

Hello:
Stick with 2.0 software, it uses the same USB driver as the older versions anyway.
Did you just buy your system from RC? I am curious because of the serial #.
I am glad that it has been confirmed that the unit actually does function, that is a plus for sure. It can be a real pain to figure out why XP won't install the device correctly. Somehow the USB ID # has gotten screwed up or is being screwed up by some other program or patch that has been applied. You can try to edit the registry and delete out all references to our device(s), and that sometimes works. Try this old thread for reference: http://forums.naturalpoint.com/cgi-bin/ ... 003#000009

I am afraid I took the hard route - I went back to a clean install of WinXP - it is now working.
However I found that if I installed the unit after installing many of the other drivers for different harware it wouldn't work - for instance if I installed the intel chipset driver (motherboard drivers) then trying to install the track IR unit screwed up again - but if I did it the other way around it worked ok.
I am using the version 2.0 software which I am now trying to puzzle out for IL2. Regarding the serial no - yes I purchased the unit from RC simulations on Wednesday last week.
Thanks for the help - Neill

Hello:
Glad to hear that you got it to work. I suspected that it could be a driver board issue. Those are really a pain to track down.

Re: Track IR wont work
I personnaly estimate it as a scandale that user have to completely reinstall their system because a driver won't act correctly if installed after other ones !
At such a price it's unbelievable !
I f there is a microsoft isssue , say it, we'll mail them to protest . If not, what about it ?
We can hardly find explanations about such problems.
What about it if at each time you put your car at repair the man say to you : you have to put a new motor into it !
Yes it's a game interface, Yes gamers have some free time to use it and can lost it to reinstal,
yes everybody as DSL connection to read all posts and downloads all microsoft patches,
yes it ain't a problem to reinstall all a system, yes it'aint painfull to reconfigure all your personnal parameters !
Sometimes I think Hardware and Software industry is totally underconsiderating their consumers !
In my job, if I do the same I have no more to do in few time because all my consulmers will be gone !! What about respect ?

Re: Track IR wont work
I have to agree with froggy on this. I'm two months into a reinstall solely to use my TrackIR. And I'm a very early adopter (nearly 2 years). I take issue with froggy's car analogy only in that the road's don't change requiring a new engine in cars. New operating systems are much like the roads changing; that's as much as I can give Jim.
I am very dissapointed that in this and other post's I've seen on this issue, you make no mention of being well aware of this problem. I've spoken to you about it at length on the phone 3 times in the last 2 months. In fact, I've also spoken to Birch and Donald as well. Not fessing up serves only to increase the frustration for users who are looking in all the wrong places for solutions. Bad enough that I had to reinstall a perfectly good setup with loads of software, but insult to injury that I had to do it on the heels of weeks of frustration for nothing. Don't do this to others sir. Bite it (again), tell us what's up, give us our choices, and let us know you're working on it.
Listen! I'm no jackal. I was willing to reinstall because I love the product and use it constantly. Aside from my sims, I'm closing in on finishing Morrowind approx 140 hrs. using TrackIR. For me and my aging hands, that's something. I'm trying Ghost Recon next. Furthermore, the fact that in 5 times calling your store I've gotten you 3 times indicates that you are wearing many hats, jumping thru many hoops and spinning plates on sticks to stay in the game. Finally, your involvement here on the boards is priceless. I simply encourage you to stay the course on the side of your clients and we'll be with you.
I'm compelled to write all this because this episode has been painful dude. Take it as my contribution to your effort and hang in there.
Thank you for your service,
Allen
btw- let's not forget about the XP shutdown issue either shall we?
