While using CFS3 with my TrackIR in multiplayer I have found that I am a serious disadvantage against my human opponents who are using the padlock view. The reason being that their aircraft are only drawn as tiny dots only a few pixels wide until they close to just about 1 nautical mile.
I am always unable to spot them until they are well within the range of their guns and any manuevers I perform will usually open the range enough to make their aircraft too small to track.
The same problem exists when playing against the AI, but the generally isn't intelligent enough to open the range or perform manuevers that will break my LOS to them.
---
Bottom line: How the heck do I increase the range that CFS3 draws the aircraft to a more realistic one?
My current graphics settings are:
Aircraft detail: 5
Scenery Detail: 1
Terrain Detail: 3
Cloud Detail: 1
Is there another override setting that I can change when inside the CFS3Config utility to open the raneg up?
Thanks!

Increase distance at which aircraft are shown
Re: Increase distance at which aircraft are shown
I'm afraid this is beyond my ability to support.
Please check out the official CFS3 page or one of the many fan pages
(sorry if this seems cold, Oracle. I'm just overloaded with post GDC and pre E3 tasks at the moment)

Re: Increase distance at which aircraft are shown
Oh don't worry Warren, as I wasn't looking for advice from Naturalpoint in particular. I was hoping someone who uses this product has encountered the same issue and found a way to resolve it.
I have posted on other forums as well and gotten the response that there is no way to address this issue. The game doesn't draw the "detailed" aircraft until it closes around 500 meters. Over that range it only shows as a very small group of pixels and it quite difficult to spot when there are clouds or if the ground is the background. It makes no sense as my eyes can easily spot single engine planes flying several miles away.
500 meters is also well within gun range and I'm sure that the aircraft would have been more than easily visible at just beyond this range under most circumstances.
I've discovered a happy medium by turning on labels. It is "unrealistic" in that it allows me to see things that I can't really see with my own two eyes, but at the same time it is allowing me to "see" things that I should be able to see in the real world.
At the very least, I'm able to fight my multiplayer foe on even ground!

This same problem is described in depth at 'Horrido'
http://pigeonh.free.fr/
It doesn't state it, but I think the application there is CFS or CFS2.
I have the same problem as you, and have addressed it by programming my 4 joystick buttons with padlock toggle, re-centre view, zoom in and zoom out keys. When enemy planes are far away, padlock them and zoom in. I find I have to keep padlocking and un-padlocking to keep situational awareness. As you get closer, zoom out. Before shooting, re-centre the view.
This seems to give a good compromise between maintaining realism as much as possible and still beaing reasonably effective. Mind you, I'm still not much of a fighter pilot, but that is probably more down to me than the equipment or set up.
