TrackIR causing crashes/auto-reboot

Post by d9748336 »

I installed the TrackIR a few days ago, and have been playing around with it. When it works - wow! - but that usually only lasts for about 10 minutes before whatever game I am using it in either quits to a black screen (sometimes with a sound repeating), or the whole computer will restart just like that.

My system specs are as follows:

TrackIR 2.01
Athlon 2000+
512 Mb PC2100 RAM
Soundblaster Digital 4.1
MSI MS-6390 mobo (VIA KM266 Chipset Based)
Windows XP

I am experiencing crashing in both FS2002 and Forgotten Battles (FB also has strange staticky sound anomalies, although this is still there even when the TrackIR is off).

Please can you help; this product is amazing, but only if I can enjoy it for more than 10 minutes at a time!

To add to the information above:

I have tried installing a USB PCI card and connecting the TrackIR through that, but the crashes continue. I have also tried removing my soundcard in case that was involved in the problem, but it makes no difference. Without help I am out of things to try.

I have also installed the latest VIA and Soundblaster drivers, to no avail.

What is causing these crashes?!

I read somewhere on this forum that it could be VIA's incorrect implementation of the USB stuff that can cause crashes. Is this correct? If so, would swapping my motherboard for a non-VIA-based one fix the problem? Can anyone recommend to me a replacement motherboard which will definitely work, bearing in mind the rest of my system components (see my first post above for a list) and, of course, price?

Doug-
Sorry to hear about your problems! You've already tried just about everything that I could easily think of. Just to make sure, is the trackIR alone when it's plugged into the USB card? There can be problems if it is sharing a hub with another high-throughput USB device.

In answer to your question, I have no other USB peripherals connected, so that can't be the problem.

I'm going to try and swap out my graphics card for the one in my older PC and see if that stops the crashes. If that doesn't work, I'm going to try to unplug everything that isn't absolutely required to test the TrackIR and see if that will have any effect. Check soon for the results!

Is it possible the motherboard could be to blame?

Doug -S!
Is this not a memory problem you describe?
I read somewhere that you must minimize TrackIR when running it, otherwise it drains your memory - maybe after 10 mins yours runs out.?
If you don't run minimized then you maybe should give it a try!
best of luck

Nope, thanks for the suggestion, but just tried that in FB and after a few mins, quit to black screen with a stuck sound. I will try different graphics card etc. tonight after work.

Have just tested my old GeForce MX 200 card, plus unplugged my floppy drive,LAN card, printer and scanner (can't unplug anything else), and after about 7 mins flying in FB, crash to black screen.

Anyone have any ideas? Any at all.
