Exciting Total Win XP Reboot!

Post by flybo777 »

Two or three days after an apparently successful TIR3-Pro installation, my HP intel P4 2.66 1024 DDR SDRAM computer started taking me on a new, exciting adventure: random, inconsistent Win XP Home reboots. At first I didn't connect it with the TIR3-Pro since it didn't occur immediately after installation.

However, after a couple of days trial and error, I discovered the one thing that eliminated the problem was unplugging the Tracker. After enjoying a few days of reboot-free computing, I tried a reinstall with the same results. BTW, on all install/reinstalls, I followed the instructions exactly. On the later reinstalls I tried changing the USB port from the front to the rear of the computer -- same results plus a message that the USB device was not recognized.

During the 2 to 3 days that it worked, it was fantastic and showed no signs of glitches or bugs.

I'm not a whiz-kid techie (too old to be a kid, too slow to be a whiz), but I did peruse the forum for ideas -- to no avail. If the solution involves aggressive things like reinstall of Win XP, I'd prefer to turn Tracker in for a refund and wait for Microsoft's stamp of approval as Windows compatible. (I do hope Natural Point is pursuing this.)

Has anyone else had this experience. Please remember, the problem is not likely related to the reinstalls since the Tracker worked fine on the initial install and then started bombing the computer before there were any reinstalls.

Thanks for any suggestions.

What kind of USB ports do you have? Is the TIR plugged into a USB hub or directly into one of the mainboard ports? What other USB devices do you have plugged in?

Is your computer overclocked in any way?

A few questions to start, but I'm guessing that it's either a USB confilict issue. There are other things it could be like failing ram or another internal problem which only manifests itself when the TIR is plugged in but I'm thinking that's less likely.

Wayne will likely chime in here soon enough and can help you better. Although I doubt it's anything specifically due to TIR itself since it works on everybody elses WinXP install there's always the possibility of a defective unit.

1. I have no hubs, pulgging directly to computer.

2. Computer is not overclocked.

3. Just now removed all USB plugs except CH yoke and did another reinstall of TIR. After installation, reboot and clicking TIR desktop icon, got a message -- could not connect to USB device, software will run but no connection to device. Inteded to write down exact message but made the mistake of leaving the computer three minutes to get a drink (of water). When I got back, the computer had already rebooted. Needless to say I again removed the TIR USB plug, which is the only thing I have found to stop the random reboots.

Thanks for taking time to offer some ideas.

Still stumped.

Interesting ... I too have been experiencing random reboots, and now that you mention it, it started after I installed my TIR. The most recent was about five minutes ago, which is why I am once again perusing the forums. I havent had the USB port problems though. Beside the TIR, I also have a printer, scanner, CH yoke & rudder, palm sync cradle, and webcam plugged into two powered hubs.

I am running WinXP Pro. I have an Intel D875PBZ mobo with an intel 2.8Ghz CPU, 1Gb RAM, GeForce4 Ti4600 video card, none of which is overclocked.

Hopefully the random reboot problem is being looked into and a solution is on the way. I wonder if anyone has been adventurous enough to load Service Pack 2 yet, and if that solves this problem.

Hello, RAAF_Iceman.

You mentioned: "More random reboots after complete uninstallation" Did you also unplug the TIR3 from the USB port? I found that unplugging the device stopped the reboots, even if the software was still installed. Uninstalling the software alone may not solve your problem. At least that's my experience.

Last night I tried a new installation again, moving the TIR3 Pro to the front USB port where the problem first showed up. Bombed again but this time I had disabled auto-reboot and got this error message:

STOP: 0X0000007E, (0XC0000005, 0XB5E7C174, 0XF78DEAAC, 0XF78DE7AC)

npusb.sys -- Address B5E7C174 base at B5E7B000, DateStamp 4069ffdd

Hope this gets solved soon. Thanks to anyone who can help.

Actually, I am exremely red faced
It was, as it turned out a major Ram problem with some (name withheld) highly rated DDR ram kits.

4 x 256Mb modules, all bad.
I just would not believe that that sort of thing could be possible. I had to find, Dl and run a MS Memtest kit to verify this.

My most humble apologies to one and all.
<both kicking self and fanning face>

Though, is there any way to change the USB IRQ's so it does not share with either the RAID host controller or the VGA controller?

HAL (are u there dave?) is such a ...........

After reinstalling and repairing my rig (software) and running with it for a bit and running well, no grief, all I can say FMD, what a concept TIR is
