SmartNav4 and XP SP3

Post by curetzky »

I am running SmartNav4 on XP with SP 3 installed. I never had SmartNav4 on XP with SP 2. I started having problems with my HP printer and now with SmartNav4. The drivers appear to become brain dead and I have to reinstall. I did see on MicroSoft's website that 3rd party software could perform differently. Does anyone have SmartNav4 running on XP with SP3 installed with no problems?

Yes, I have it running here.

Desktop or laptop system?

Are you plugging in directly to the system, or are you using a hub?

Have you tried isolating the device on the USB ports?

Have you tried turn off any kind of power save feature for your USB ports?

In the "Device Manager" you can right click the "USB Root Hub"(s), that show, and then select properties. On the power management tab, uncheck the box that allows the computer to turn off the USB port to save power (i.e. uncheck the box). Sometimes that has an impact on the connectivity of the devices.

Thank you for a quick response. I am using a desktop.

It's plugged into the system which has 8 USB ports.

I haven't tried isolating it. I need help moving cables.

I have turned off the power save feature on the USB Root Hubs according to your instructions.

Now I will see if it happens again.

THANKS AGAIN

I un-checked the box on all Root Hubs and I am still having problems. I am having problems with my HP printer also. It appears to be a USB issue. The behavior I am seeing with SmartNAV is: When I reboot my PC the system comes up and SmartNAV starts but has trouble Tracking. In the SmartNAV box it is flipping from No Data to Tracking and back then evenually gives up and stays on No Data. If I shut the system down and restart it SmartNAV starts up and runs fine. My guess is the USB ports are being cleared of something on the shutdown. I am working with Microsoft on the issue. Hopefully a solution can be reached. Any ideas from your end would be apprecated.

I have a very similar problem with the SmartNav not tracking properly after a reboot. I don't have any problems however with any other USB devices on the system. A couple of other people have mentioned similar issues as well, so I think there is something that the SmartNav doesn't like on certain systems.

Try looking at other USB ports, next to where the SN is pluugged in, and try moving any cables that maybe plugged in next to the SmartNAV, as they could be sharing USB power.

I have removed SP3 from my system and the problem still exist with SmartNAV4. The HP printer problem went away but not the SmartNAV4. I tried the isolation suggestion with no success. Any suggestions?

You could look at using an external USB hub, with it's own power supply.

We like the d-link hubs.
