Tracking goes haywire after some time

Post by focher »

I have a brand new TrackIR 5 with the Track Clip Pro and the final release of v5 software. The software tracks fine for awhile, but then goes crazy and my virtual "head" becomes lost and no longer tracks. Pressing the center key brings it back to the center point and again works for a bit before losing its tracking accuracy. It is still "tracking" as there is movement, but the movement does not correspond to my head movement.

I have used the Camera mode to ensure that only the Track Clip Pro tracking points are detected by the camera - despite that they are often red unless I move my head. There are no other detected infrared items. I have a high-backed black chair, so don't think it is catching anything behind me.

I moved the camera so it is off-center on my monitor, and have aligned my Track Clip Pro with the camera so that the Camera mode shows the Track Clip Pro in the center of the four-square grid. However, it is only in the top half of the grid even if I move my monitor to its highest or lowest position. I don't know if this is of any consequence.

Is this indicative of a defective camera or what other causes are there to the problem. It seems strange that it works for a bit before going crazy.

Other information - running Windows 7 RC1 and have the camera plugged directly into the motherboard USB port, so no hub.

Red = bad. :) A red marker is one that the software is rejecting as a good solution to your head position. If one of the TrackClip PRO markers is red, your tracking will be destabilized. Can you please link a screenshot of your camera view when the marker turns red?

This could definitely be part of the problem. You can adjust the angle of the TrackIR camera, as it is on a swivel where it's connected to the base. Adjust the TrackIR angle so the TrackClip PRO is in the center of the camera view, both vertically and horizontally.

I doubt it's a defective camera. It's probably a positioning issue. The screenshot should help clarify this.

I will definitely put a screenshot up later when I get home showing the 3 Track Clip Pro sensors as they are detected by the camera. As I mentioned, all three show as red most of the time and then flicker to green only when I move.

Any other ideas why they would be graphically represented accurately but as red? The camera obviously sees the sensors properly but why wouldn't it like the way it sees them?

Will also try to move the camera. I didn't notice a swivel on the base, just the ability to move the legs to better act as a mounting brace for the camera on top of the monitor.

Just to clarify, if the grid looks like:

Code: Select all

+-------+-------+
| | |
| 1 | 2 |
| | |
+-------+-------+
| | |
| 3 | 4 |
| | |
+-------+-------+
The camera see the sensors on the clip right at the center line of 1 & 2, but never down to 3 & 4.

Will come back with the results based on your suggestions.

This is in my normal sitting position with the camera adjusted.

This is if I move back about 6-8 inches from the desk / keyboard.

In the "back" position where the sensors show green, the head tracking does not go crazy and seems pretty good. But it appears that the camera is losing some of the tracked sensors.
